At this point, it is just very stagnant. Has anything really new and different and fantastic sounding come out over the last 20 years?
Pop songs are just a bunch of computer synth sounds and computer rhythm sounds with an auto tuned female singer over the top.
As it skews more to hip hop pop, it just has the same trap beats that have been on every song for over 20 years now.
It's not that its worse, it's just not changing.
And for the "their is great music out there, you have to find it" crowd, I don't think so. Even in rock and metal music, I don't hear anything exciting. It all sonically sounds the same as it has for the last 20 years.
The only thing that could change it now would be the invention of some new instrument or sound. There were two groundbreaking times in rock/pop music. First was the invention and popular use of the electric guitar and bass in the 50's. The second was the onset of synths in the 70's. Ever since then, it has basically been finding ways to make these instruments sound different, fresh, and exciting. I think we've started to run out of ways though.

I disagree.
There is a lot of great new music out there. Obviously tastes differ, but I have found a lot of new bands that I spend a lot of time listening to.
There were years in the past where I just listened to the same old bands over and over. But I committed to listening to new music and have been very happy with what I have discovered. It takes a little effort and weeding through a bunch of garbage - and even good music that you just personally don't like.

Why don't you guys look into modern underground music instead of listening to the current slop? I'm 17 and instead of harping about the modern music industry is awful, I look into music made by real people.

Ironically, the major exception is... rap.
Supposedly to get the drum sound rap fans demand you have to use a studio. Which is why if you drive through the ghetto you will see signs advertising recording studios on utiliy poles
How do you know that studio advertised isn't just guy with ProTools and an MPC One+... or worse, someone with a laptop and Garage Band? Just because someone calls something a "studio" doesn't mean it is Capitol Studios A.

And that guy's studio probably didn't sound any worse than The Power Station...where Springsteen recorded the bulk of his big material.

At your age, you don't have the frame of reference to understand what we're lamenting. When we were 17, you didn't have to dig dig dig through a bunch of garbage to find something good, we didn't have to dumpster dive. The good shite was easily available and sold and marketed. Of course there was a lot of trash too, but local radio stations were still independent and had different shows at different hours to showcase new or underground or alternative non-pop music. Same with MTV when it was still a TV version of a radio station.

There was plenty of garbage in the mainstream when I was a teenager. I wasn't finding new music on the radio even back. I think Rick and a lot of people here all suffer from old man bias, just think everything was better back in their day and not really open to anything new.

If you're just listening to music on American radio and focusing on the Grammies, you're missing out on some great bands and artists coming out of the UK and Ireland at the moment.
There's a lot of great music and new artists out there

There's a reason almost every radio station plays a mix of 70s/80s/90s and some occasional 60s now.
I drive my wife crazy with 80s tunes and she'll turn off Bluetooth and put the radio on and it's the same stuff

Still tons of good music. I'd argue the Grammies are getting worse.
First one is Black Light by Groove Armada, Music is the Weapon by Major Lazer and pretty much anything by Khrunbign. Sp?

Because anyone under 35 stopped listening to terrestrial radio a decade ago?

Correct. "Mainstream" music is the same as "Mainstream" media: They both cater to the LCD of society.
What the Grammys push is for the LCD now. You can find plenty of great music outside of the mainstream.
