Kinda sounds like you think all white country boys are racist and can’t have empathy for blacks. Weird position to take.

Well you took it for me so…congrats?

MB you’ve always had a nice handle on this type of thing IMO, but yes the leap that The Nashville Sound made was the breaking point for many folks.

I still spin Isbell often, but mostly DBT through Something More Than Free. Southeastern was the sober record, SMTF was the kid record and often that’s as heavy as many people wanna get.

Frankly, musicians deserve to put forth any music/lyrics they feel strongly about, but fans can also choose which records they prefer to buy/listen to.

He’s one of the best songwriters to come around. He’s become off putting to a lot of people though.

I just separate the art from the artist I guess. His first solo record is still my favorite. Southeastern is a gem.

I've seen Isbell half a dozen times and I've never found his live shows to be overly political. He's definitely more woke than when I first discovered him, and I haven't seen him since before COVID-19. I will be seeing him in Houston in July, and I hope the show is as good as the others I've attended. He's a hell of a songwriter, his band is above average (IMO), and I really don't care about his politics as long as he doesn't throw them in my face when I've paid to see him live. If he does this time, then I'll probably stay away in the future.

union Democrat anti-corporatist, anti-war type thing, not a "everything is white supremacy and misogyny thing."

Songs about guys coming back from Iraq broken and rich people shutting down the mill are tolerable even for hardcore Rs, because we know there's some truth (if overblown/misdirected) and because it makes for good country and folk music

One of these you described would be considered "right wing" now and is part of the views of the growing populism among the GOP

The other is what Isbell is and is considered progressive and are the worst people on the planet

His shows aren’t political. He has a few songs with some “woke” lyrics. I’ve never seen him go off on some political tangent live and I’ve probably seen him play 7 times. His persona on Twitter is why a lot of people are stirred up. I remember in 2010 I think it was when he was drunk on Twitter calling out dierks Bentley for stealing the melody to devil is my running mate and going off the rails. After that he was written off completely and then he got sober and put out southeastern and produced American aquariums burn flicker die and rebounded big time.

He’s a flaming liberal but I love his music. Don’t care. He’s got some good arse music. I listen to him almost every day at one point or another.

Got some classics.

Right wing southerners aren’t pro-union, and they’re only anti corporations so long as those corporations like gay people.

And Nashville sound has some amazing songs on it.

Chaos and Clothes is an amazing song.

Tupelo is good.

If We Were Vampires

They’re all great songs and overall it’s a strong album. I find it’s the haters that let the politics get in the way more than Isbell.

You have no clue what you are talking about

This isn't 1995 or even 2005. Trump wasn't pro-union but the rest of his platform was populism. JD Vance whipped arse last night as a social conservative but his economic platform is populist and nationalist. The rural and working class part of the GOP along with the Hispanic part is leaning more and more populist by the day

Tucker Carlson had the Union organizer from Amazon on his show and praised him for what he was doing

Codeine is a good one. Man once again. Don’t give a shite about his out spoken liberal opinion, his music is damn good. All time great level.

Go ask the Poli board, which is full of right wing southerners, how they feel about unions.

There isn’t a single state in the south that isn’t a Freedom to Work state.

Did Tucker have the Union Organizer for the Nissan factory in Tennessee on? No.

I would argue the populist elements register far more in the rust belt than the south where nationalism is a much bigger driving force (not that Trump needed much help capturing the American South)

Also where is Jd Vance from? Where does he live? Where is he running for Congress?

fricking Ohio

By my count he has written one overtly woke song - White Man’s World. Then he has one written in response to Trump winning the 2016 election - Hope the High Road - and it’s not even 100% clear that is what the song is about.

I think the woke thing is blown way out of proportion and is more about his Twitter feed than his actual music.
