It all sounds mostly the same at first listen. Then as I start to re-listen it really opens up

This one will be easy to blow off by fair-weather metal fans, but its truly fantastic. I couldn't imagine they could drop this one at this stage of their career. Once you get past what you would expect this band would do and you listen to it without feeling jaded about what another old arse bunch of guys might put out then you will enjoy it. When giving a listen, just think this is a band you never heard and its the debut album. Good stuff indeed.

They need to slow it down with the speed metal and go back to heavy grooves.

Yeah my favorite Metallica is the “dark groove metal” Metallica, a genre I just then made up for them. Sounds awesome, needa determine who all else belongs in the category.

Agreed…Harvester, Sad, Thing…those kind of songs are my favorite Metallica songs…there’s one on the new album too. You Must Burn I think is the name of it…

Add Inamorata to that, it's main riff could be on a Down or Sabbath album.

Harvester and Sanatarium………I could live off just those two songs. Or subsist, if you will.

Of course though there a few other pairs, any of which could probably hold me over until death as well.

Prob in minority here, but tried listening yesterday and got bored 3 songs in…

They will never recapture the magic of black album and prior. Even load and death magnetic are better IMO.

I feel like a lot of one’s listening experience has to do with personal circumstances at the time.

I’ve been a big Metallica fan for 30 years, but today, with a wife and kids and job and bills, I’ve still only found time to listen to just half the album, so far.

The music won’t grab me like it did when I was younger and Metallica was the most important thing in my life.

Currently doing my first listen through. Im liking the riffage, something about James' voice isn't doing it for me.

intro to You Must Burn is sick

Listened to it twice the last two days while driving up to Cedar Rapids for work. You Must Burn is my early favorite.

I think it shows the strength of the album that there are a lot of songs thrown out as favorites. After 4 or 5 listens the album really connects with you. Solid effort, best since Load for me.

I guess I'm just enjoying listening to these guys still do their thing .It doesn't grab me the same as when as I was a teen but I still find this album a really fun listen.

Just an aside, but it is so interesting to see the evolution of opinions on the black album. When it came out, it was a pretty big disappointment to most Metallica fans I knew, but it seems to have replaced Master of Puppets as the standard for younger fans. It's a good album, it just was pretty generic against the other rock the was out at the time.

I didn't consider it generic. It was different from their prior work, just a bit. But songs like The Unforgiven grew on me pretty fast. Great album. My first exposure to Metallica had been Ride the Lightning. Fade to black is an all-time great song.

I like 72 a lot so far, but it inspired me to go back and listen to those 4 bonus tracks they released after Death Magnetic - I had forgotten how actually awesome those 4 are.

Rebel of Babylon is great. Hate Train.

This sounds like Hardwired which isn’t a bad thing. Those are the two best albums since Black

This album is really good but this song is by fricking far and away my favorite song on the album. The first 1:30 of this song is gold.

I went and listened through this album because of this thread, and it is pretty damn good. Inamorata is my favorite so far

I like it better than Death Magnetic, which was the only post-Reload album I had paid any attention to
