I don't think that we're making any deal with the Lakers this season, because we want that pick too much.
In my favorite fantasy, we win our last game of the season to edge them out for the #10 spot, and then we go on to win the play-in, we beat the Warriors after Steph rolls his ankle in game 1, we beat the #4-5 seed winner and play in the conference finals this season and lose to the Suns in six games.
Meanwhile the Lakers only have a few ping-pong balls, but we luck out and they earn us the #1 overall pick.
Hey, it could happen.

The very fact that Rich Paul would have to answer that question shows the massive failure of their roster construction: "Let's just get all of LeBron's old friends to play together---what could go wrong?"
FWIW, the Lakers still have the league's hardest remaining schedule, according to Tankathon. The 538 computer model only gives them a 27% chance of making the actual playoffs (not the play-in), meaning that their computer gives us a 73% of getting ping-pong balls for a high pick.
Their computer currently projects them at 37-45 to finish the season tied with the Knicks as the 8th-worst record.
Of course, they still project us at 34-48 (6th-worst), so it isn't crazy to imagine a scenario where our own winning helps us get top-ten pick.

Gotta laugh at the preseason Taylor Horton-Tucker love—-
Amazing how by just being on the Lakers your value skyrockets, even though you’ve never done anything in your career.
They didn’t learn from the Kuzma crap

Wow. I didn't realize that Russell Westbrook set an incredible record last night, and I gotta give him his props.
LINK
To play five and a half years, and to commit at least one turnover every game, that's special. That's a record that will probably never be broken, and I'm glad that he was able to set it in a Lakers uniform.

Last night
@russwest44 committed a turnover in his 400th consecutive game (dating back to March 16, 2016). It is by far the longest such streak in @NBA history.
The next longest is 239 by James Harden (and the next longest active streak is 132 by Darius Garland).

Even if he were to have 0 turnovers for the rest of this season, he would still hold the all-time record.

How's that working out for the Hawks this season?

Fat finger edges that one.
I think Young has Covid right now. Has he been bad? I thought he's been his regular self. I know the team has struggled..
I went down the TO rabbithole. Some fascinating stats. This isn't Westbrooks worst TO year by far. He was over 5 a few years ago..

Lakers back below .500 at 16-17.
Lebron had 36/9/6 and Russ had 30/7/4 and they still lost by 28 to the Spurs.
Lakers are currently sitting at #6 but the Pels are only 4 games behind them at #13.

Yeah, it's hard to win games when you shoot 18.5% from 3. The Lakers were 5-27 from deep in this one, while the Spurs were 18-39---that's a huge disparity.
With our win and this Lakers loss, the 538 computer model now gives both teams a projected record of 35-47, with a 20% chance of making the actual playoffs.
The Lakers still have the #1 toughest remaining schedule, according to Tankathon. They should lose a lot more games.

It's weird how all the bottom teams in the West a month ago (us, Spurs, Rockets and OKC) have all gone on these runs lately. Nobody looks to be outright tanking righ now. Going to be a jumble for the playing. I expect the Rockets and OKC will dump their vets and plummet. But the Spurs are trying and have some decent players. I think they stick around (especially if they make that Simmons move)..

Pels need to get wins now if they want to make this play-in a thing, because after next game, we are going back to the murders row for a while. After the Thunder it’s:
@Cavs
Bucks
@Jazz
@Suns(back 2 back)
@Warriors(3rd game in 4 nights)
Raptors
@Wolves
@Clippers
Nets
Very possible we end up 2-7 in that stretch.
Schedule eases up a decent bit from there, with only a few challenging games thrown in, but we dig too big a hole on this next stretch and it could make things very difficult.

No matter the outcome, Willie has shown me a couple of things that will spur growth, something we really haven’t seen much of with the previous coaching administrations.
This team will not quit. They will continue to play hard no matter how things look. Former teams would have packed it in and loafed around the court by now. Even the younger players would have said frick it. Willie has this team flying around like the summer league team did.
EDIT: obligatory frick the Lakers.

Durant is still out with COVID, though he could still clear protocols in time for tomorrow's game.
[Update: Nets officially list KD as OUT for tomorrow. That unfortunately turns an easy Nets win into a 50-50 game.]

Now in a 5-game losing streak! Westbrook shot 4-20 tonight.
What's interesting is that, if you look at the Western Conference, of all of the teams in 6th through 15th place, the Pelicans are the only one with a winning record in their last 10 games. And the team in 4th place, the Grizzlies, have lost three straight. And the team in 5th place just lost Paul George for the next month and is certainly going to drop in the standings. There are really only three good teams in the West this season, and they are very good.
