My first thought was the Dell Demps syndrome, but I have to believe that Griff, based on his rep and track record, has more foresight than that.
Right???
My exact thought. Veteran can mean a lot of different things, so I’ll hope it’s not the type of vets that Dell was getting for us

It's just an example, obviously. But regardless of Lakers or Philly what assets do they have? Kuzma?
High 2nds have more value than late 1sts, we see it all the time when it comes down to penny pinching as well.

May not be a grizzled vet, but go see if the Wizards would consider giving up Bertans. He is the hottest shooter in the game. The spacing he would give us would be remarkable.

I mean as long as we don’t trade any of the Lakers picks or out future first who cares. Use the seconds and the Cleveland protected first to get some talent, sure.

People hear "Buying" and think "Spending". You can buy stuff at the dollar store. A trade like Miller + Frank + Okafor for MKG or Marvin Williams doesn't cost you any long term assets or even picks, but it does upgrade your roster with a useable vet.
Whatever trade is made shouldn't be very exciting unless they decide to cut bait on Lonzo.

forgot about Marvin Williams. That would be a great pickup.

That would be the case if we were giving something up.
If you trade away Miller and expirings for a vet expiring, then that was just a this year upgrade, which means they want to win now without giving anything up.

Just because they're expiring doesn't mean it's a Win Now only move. You could always use Bird Rights next summer to resign whoever you trade for to a 1 year overpay like we did with Miller this year if the goal was just to have a financial instrument to facilitate trades next season.

quote:Miller was relative peanuts compared to MKG or Williams. An overpay could cost in the tens of millions for those guys. But, if Gayle gives the green light, it may make sense.

nah, not for him.
he's done making more than 8 to 10MM.
hard to overpay at that price

I’m not sure if you’ve looked how they are doing now, but no one is paying either of these guys tens of millions, even on an overpay.

quote:Was anyone paying Miller $15 million over 2 years? He was basically a league minimum type of player. The advantage of having bird rights (as Tiger said above) is to pay them whatever we want over the cap. If they are already making $13 million a year, I would not think the player would consider under $8 million an overpay as suggested (although that is more than I would want to pay for them). We would not be signing them for their on the court value based on that suggestion.

Williams might be harder to keep on a 1 year overpay, but I doubt MKG even gets the MLE on the market. Not shooting 3s is hard to overcome in today’s game.

quote:I doubt he gets the MLE either. However, if you are talking an overpay, it would not be less than the MLE. Look at what Miller got to use his contract as a potential trade piece. That was well over his playing value.

one year, 7.25MM.
his 2nd year in non guaranteed
miller is/was a salary slot, nothing more

Right, but a $10-$12 million expiring is fine as a trade piece. I’m not sure why you want to small time an expiring the following year anyway. The guys MM talked about going after with Miller and Moore to give the Pels another expiring contract to trade next year weren’t making under $10 million anyway.

wizards are in pit of misery due to wall injury and salary. They must do miracles.
They have a whole month to hear offers. Thats not hard ball. They are taking calls. Theyll get back to you in February.
