I think Haynes jumped the gun breaking this.

i don't think you can do that.
They are still on the hook for $15.8M owed to him for this year. that's what was guaranteed of the $30.8M he had left on the contract.
I don't think there is anything stopping them from waiving him, and then re-signing him to a lower contract if no one picks him up on waivers. So, they could waive him and put his 15.8 mil on the books and then re-sign him using a tax payer mid-level (I don't know exactly what their salary situation is). Which would effectively pay him somewhere around ~22 mil this season, rather than ~31.

Theoretically they could do this.
In practice, they are likely over the tax the point to where they can resign someone like that at a competitive salary due to the new CBA.

Exactly. This is a tax casualty move. More things like this are going to happen. Even rich teams won’t be able to just pay whoever they want. It’s going to be good for the league overall but unfortunately Pelicans are kind of one of the teams who are screwed also. I wonder if we’d actually take on salary like CP3 when we’re probably going to make a cost saving move of our own.

Ask yourself would the Suns who already have Durant and Booker want to trade their only interior presence for CJ?? If you can’t figure it out, ask for help.
Haha, what the hell? Why are you so angry?

Depends on what that salary is and what our other long term implications are.
Getting CP3 on a cheap deal isn’t necessarily a problem but throwing the bank at him like Griff wanted to do a few years back isn’t going to be feasible or even possible.

CJ sucks other than being reliable and a good locker room guy. Just because Zion is a zero doesn’t mean that keeping CJ and his horrible deal is the right move.
Y’all say CJ is this great leader - id disagree. He had 1.5 years to “lead” Zion and hasn’t done shite.

You can lead a horse to water but can’t make them drink
You can send a kid to college but you can’t make them think
You can browbeat Zion over getting his arse in shape and on the court but you can’t make him do it.

I'm pretty sure you can't do that. You can't resign with the team that waived you, even if no one picks you up on waivers.
That's cheating the system. They owe him $15.8M, and they would divy that out over 3 years if they waive him, so basically $5M/yr in dead money. You can't go resign him for say $2M/yr, and now you are essentially paying him $7M/yr, when you should be on the hook for $15.8M
I can't really find where it says it specifically, but what i did find is it says the team that waives a player cannot resign that player until the original contract expires.
Also, this news that they are waiving him is a bit premature. You can't officially waive anyone until July 23rd. I think they are in discussions with CP3 about what he wants the team to do with him, but it sounds obvious they don't want to pay him $30M this season, which ultimately means you aren't playing for us next year.

They can do it, they would be waiving him within this year/season and then signing him post June 30. It’s a weird deal for sure, but can be done. Word is if they stretch his guaranteed amount, then that goes out the window and they couldn’t.

Your CJ takes are just amazingly bad.

If zion plays it opens a lot up for CJ and Ingram. CJ had to carry the load more with injuries plus he was playing hurt also

I wish you could fix stupid, but you just can’t fix stupid unfortunately. This post is proof of that.

Which begs another question…
CP3 only has one more year which is partially guaranteed and one with no guarantee.
If they stretched him, would it be considered a one year deal (three year stretch) or a two year deal (five year stretch)?
The latter would allow them to eat about $3m/season for five years to be done with him.

YOu can't waive players anymore. That ended in January. You can buy them out anytime, but you can't waive them until July 23rd.

that's what i would think. His contract would still be in service so they couldn't resign him if he's waived, even if he becomes a UFA when no one claims him.

If you want a silver lining it makes it easy to tell who not to take seriously.

CJ frustrated the living hell out of me this year, but after learning that he was dealing with a serious injury to his SHOOTING thumb, I pulled back.
Can't wait till next year when he's not in pain with every shot. So many more of those open 3's are going to fall. Will be a huge boost getting him back at full health.
(or have the gods of NOLA health gotten a hold of CJ too??)

CP3 has $15 mil guaranteed left on a 1 year contract. If they stretched him it would be $5 mil cap hit over 3 years.
I don’t believe you can add the non guaranteed years to the stretch provision without paying anything extra, but I could be wrong. Didn’t the lakers try to do something similar with Luol Deng.
