Anyone think he Zion may have put on weight while he was injured? He looked a little thicker than media day.

I hope that's not it because that would be super concerning if he's always just a week away from blimping up.

Can his conditioning be a little better? Sure.

So he's not in shape.

Again, let me know if there are any other guys in the league you see routinely keeled over in exhaustion every time someones shooting free throws.
When i see him walking off the court when a timeout is called, or when he's taken out, he looks like my fat arse trying to breath after i just sprinted. you dont' see anyone else every looking like that.

He's not in shape, and it's affecting him in a pretty big way on the defensive end.
And it's fine. Give him a month more of playing games and he'll be in much better game shape. There's a big difference between running the track in the offseason and playing fast paced nba games.

But if he's out of shape he's missing those fts in the 4th

You mean the two flat free throws that hit the front of the rim and rolled in?
One thing i will say about Zion is that he seems to make those free throws when they matter most. I almost would want him taking the free throws with the game on the line more than anyone else on the team.

Someone tell CJ to pass the ball. He is not like that. He will take a hard contested shot instead of hitting the open man.

Coaches are scared of him. SMH.

This dude is a broken record with this, every single game, after CJ continually to have his best assist numbers of his career by far

The week off didn't help. It's two steps forward one step back with his conditioning.

I think he'll get it together in a few weeks.

CJ is great to watch as option 3. Not so much at 1/2

We can agree on that.

If he was truly out of shape I don't think he takes lebron one on one to the paint constantly in the 4th though

That's the other thing that poster whiffs on after every game.

We all know he's not good as a #1 option. He's solid as #2 but we know from a decade in POR that isn't ideal for how good we want to be and how far we want to go.

But as a #3, it's perfect. With injuries, the roles have changed. Everything will be fine if we can just ever get healthy for once.

Also, Zion hit a middy last night and it looked good. If he starts taking and hitting that consistently, it’s fricking over

Agreed, that's the shot he needs to take, especially if teams are just going to clog the paint.

The fact we have yet to consistently run(in fact I dont think we have run a single version of this yet?) a Zion/Cj inverted Pick and Roll is grounds for prosecuting this coaching staff for crimes against basketball nature

100% agree.
Although i think it's difficult to do with JV in the game. Larry has that little floater going so with him in the game he can cut into the paint if it gets too clogged for Zion and he can hit that floater.

But Zion needs to hit that short jump shot that he can get anytime he wants from just inside the free throw line. hell he can almost get it at the dotted line in front the free throw line.

I've been disappointed in zion this year but i think we can all agree willie still doesnt know how to use him. Zion needs the ball in his hands earlier. Not forcing the low post action or running him off curls inside the 3pt line. He needs to touch the ball outside the 3pt line and let people clear out for him to drive. Willie has got to start understanding this

That's the only way we use him, it's maddening.

Yes. And if teams want to build this wall with 5 guys when that happens, then make sure CJ/Trey and another shooter are out there with him and i'll gladly take wide open 3's all game long

Exactly, the low post action and curls inside the 3pt line take away one of the biggest reasons zion is zion and thats his speed.

I mean the thing is JV is no slouch from three

I know it's not actually zero, but NBA tracking data shows Zion with exactly zero PnR ball handler possessions so far. I know it's more like a half dozen, but thats stil too low.

An obvious play to me is an inverted Zion/Cj pick n Roll with Trey, JV, and Naji on the arc. One cutter and Zion has multiple options.

Of course Zion also has to be willing to stop an hit that mid range or floater if the D sags to the rim, but it seems like all the low post and handoffs(both of which Zion is scoring below 50% on) is overthinking this to a degree

Yep

I just don't get the dribble hand off with the big at the free throw line.

It immediately allows for not just an easy double but also an easy recovery if Zion passes back to the big. I don't get the benefit of it.

He has to work for everything, not enough easy shots/lobs. The big to big passing isn't strong right now. When a player fronts him, a big flashes to the foul line and that should be an easy lob for 2.

CJ also needs to find him for easier shots. A couple times on semi-fast breaks Zion had an angle and CJ didn't deliver.

This. All of this. Willie needs to learn how to use zion and fast. When BI gets back, anytime he is on the bench, we should be running point zion. Anytime they are both on the floor we should be running Zion/BI PnRs where both guys can act as the screener or ball handler.
