Small college school, COVID-era draft pick - guys like this are typically behind in development.

That being said, he's likely a RT or guard like other have said.

He needs to be the left guard next year. It’s weird because his rookie year he graded very high at run blocking, but apparently his run blocking sucked this year at LT. Give him all off season and training camp and hopefully he’s a plus at that position and we didn’t totally blow a first round pick.

I'm old enough to remember when people on this board were yelling at everyone that Penning was worth all the stupid trades we made in 2022 and would be an all pro. It's amazing how blinded fans are by their fandom.

I’m just fascinated Andrius Peat has gone a whole season without being carted off for a stubbed toe .

I was very much cut Peat in the summer of 2023, glad I wasn't making the decisions. He's not great but he's really bailed out the O-Line at LT.

New coach will decide that.

I think Penning is too slow to be a RT or LT. He has a chance at guard IMO, but he would have to improve dramatically to be a tackle.

I think it’s also telling that Young comes in as an extra offensive lineman and not Penning.

He can definitely mash at guard, there's got to be way more to the story than what we've heard so far.

That it's possible that there's more to the story than we've heard, and the media has done absolutely nothing to report on it would be more of a travesty than wasting a 1st round pick on a LT with no lateral quickness.

Him not playing guard right now, or backup up either tackle says everything. He's a bust. I don't think he's on the team next year.

I think he is just dumb and way behind. I don't think it's ssome great conspiracy.

I would see if I could use him as part of a trade package to move up and get one of these quarterbacks coming in the draft.

He still has got two more years, three if they exercise the fifth year option, on a rookie contract.

with this FO and coaching staff you cannot really judge any players because better coaching can fix most bad play.

but this FO and coaching staff prefers having TE Johnson out there dropping 3-4 balls right in his hands every game, and leaves TE graham on the inactive list and not playing.

that is the brain trust we have running this circus.

I think the same. Coming from a small school, everybody knew he would need time. Bad coaching hasnt helped him.

But I think they overestimated how much he has between the ears. Physically he's a mauler. Footwork wise he's a disaster.

Brett Kollmann on YouTube thought Penning didn't have the feet for tackle and would end up a guard in his pre-draft scouts, and I think that's largely been proven correct so far.

What is odd is that I saw Penning's run blocking has been the weak point this year despite him being well suited to be a mauler, so I wonder if he hasn't really caught on to the mental part yet.

It's a confidence issue at this point. As Stinchcomb said, they knew he was raw and needed the reps to work through the growing pains but he lost his rookie season and a lot of training camp to do that. Having not gotten those reps and improvement they decided to throw him out there to work it out in the preseason and early in the year and it was a disaster just like it would have been if they had done that in his rookie year.

IMO he'll become a bust when Saint move on from him, but it's not from a lack of raw talent. Maybe they reached on him but they failed as coaches to recognize he wasn't ready to be thrown to the wolves and they failed to have a decent backup plan.

Sucks that Penning is in such a shitty situation with an organization that doesn't understand how to develop the talent they acquire.

I mean look how long it's taken them to figure out how to use Baun, and there was nothing in his college game tape that suggested he should be doing anything other than what they just realized this past game.

How many other player can you name that are being used in a way that does not maximize their strengths and actually exposure their weaknesses? Or drafting players and disregarding their playing styles or natural positions. Then we call them busts... hint hint ... A center that's playing out of position.

And I'll add no I'm not defending Penning, he's a grown arse man and a professional but he's also a player that everyone under the sun knew needed development and the Saints staff thought they knew better.

they have to focus him on being a mauling LG. that is our salvation. use his strengths and bolster his confidence and game.
