Do we even play Barrett tonight?

But to do that, we need to secure Teddy to a long term deal. What will that look like? How will it work if Brees stays another year? I racked my brain on it and thought of many ways (cheaper year next year with incentives if he starts, and the big bucks following that; franchise and eventually extend but that would be hard if Brees stays; backload the frick out of it, etc.), but in the end realized it doesn't matter because one way or another we'll find a way to make it work, because we definitely did not make this trade for a one year rental.
This is really the crux of it, Bone. This is why I was melting yesterday. I like the move in terms of "secure the guy for the future and have a good backup for 2018" .. I don't even have a problem with it being a 3rd as long as we are able to keep him around. But I just feel like there are too many variables that are at the moment "unsure" at best for mostly the reasons you said. If Brees doesn't retire after this season, this is suddenly a major clusterfrick. Teddy bridgewater wants to start, not sit around and wait. And even if you can get him to agree to a weird contract like you said, what if Brees still wants to play and is dominating after 2019?
Not to mention we handed the guy all the cards by giving up a 3rd for him. I feel like we could end up in a situation where we still have Brees next offseason and Teddy is saying "well I'm leaving" and we have to literally let a 3rd walk out the door or franchise him and have $50M in the QB position

Forgot they had Barrett on the team, I see him as a PS player all the way though. Needs to be developed and groomed as QB.

Brees signed a 2 year deal with the Saints, didn't he?? But as I said already Drew plays out his last 2 seasons and then Bridgewater takes over provided they have signed him to a new deal. Sitting on the sidelines and watching Brees perform as well as watching him work hard in practices is the best case scenario for Bridgewater. As well as continuing to work on that knee and getting to the 100% healthy plateau because there's a doctor on record saying that his knee was completely shredded from that injury. But overall I thought that was a good deal by the Saints in giving up a 3rd for Bridgewater which more than likely can be considered a 4th round pick because of where they'll rank if they are a playoff team that has gone deep into the playoffs. Plus, they also received a 6th round pick along with Bridgewater, so, good deal by them imo.

Worst case, if Teddy leaves, we gained a 6th round pick and get our 3rd rd pick back as a compensatory pick. All the while having a 25 yo accurate experienced backup for this year's Super Bowl run.
Best case, when Brees retires after winning another Lombardi this year while setting career passing & td records, and Teddy extends here, we got a young but accurate veteran for just a 3rd rd pick, in a weak draft year for QBs when we don't even have a 1st rd pick.
It's a win-win around.

Unfortunately this is not the worst case. We have no 1st round or 3rd round pick next year, so basically any holes the team sees will have to be filled in free agency. The way the compensatory pick formula works basically guarantees that if Teddy walks we won’t get a 3rd unless we sign no one but bargain bin players since we have very few other players expiring. So the real worst case is: Brees has an average or down year but wants to stay for one more, Teddy wants to be a starter and get starter money so he walks (because the only way the saints can stop him is with a 20M+ tag, not an option with brees still on the roster), and the saints don’t get a comp pick for him leaving because they have to sign other players to fill holes. Now they have no QB of the future and no draft capital.

That's not worst case. If we sign the same or more FAs (not counting cut players) than we lose we get nothing.
So we'd intentionally have to sit out of FA to attempt to get a 3rd back, which is not a smart move.

Umm, for those of you saying this trade is good if Bridgewater walks after this season, are you crazy? To give up a 3rd rounder for a one year rental of a player that will likely never see the field is insanity. This trade is an epic fail if he is not retained. I happen to believe the Saint’s plan is to keep him or they would never have made the move.

We get a 3rd back if he walks.
So no it really isn't.

That’s assuming the Saints qualify for a compensatory pick which is hardly a guarantee. The Saints almost never get these so banking on that is stupid.

We don't just get a third if he leaves. We have to sign fewer FAs than we lose, which the Saints did once (maybe twice) in the entire Payton era.
Why would we tank FA next year for a chance (not guarantee) at a third? That's stupid.
One idiot reporter said this and now people are taking it as gospel. Not how it works. Not how any of this works.

I know someone jokingly asked earlier (because you KNOW they talked), but Payton DEFINITELY talked to Parcells about Teddy. Pretty much told the same "in the playoffs" story Parcells did.

He apparently talked to Zimmer about him too. Payton did his homework

Unbiased reporters are loving the trade.. but these are the same guys that also loved the aquisition of Spiller, Byrd and Klein, so I take that shite with a grain of salt.
What I do take comfort in is how much in common he has with Drew injury wise. Drew is proof you can revitilize your career after an injury, and his was much worse. Drew, Teddy and Taysom. We just went from bottom to the top at QB depth.
