Looking to buy some new sunglasses for golf. Always loved the oakleys I had for baseball. I remember in the 2000s they had the M frame and then a more expensive and bulkier frame. I cannot for the life of me remember what those ones were called.

I look on the Oakley website and it’s the same frame as the modern Radars but I sore they had a different name. Were they always called radars or did they do a marketing change since the late 2000s early 2010s?

yea name changed to radar from m-frame. some slight differences but the closest to m-frame

Don’t trust me. Do the research. By all means, keep using cheap lenses. If you are too ignorant to understand the science of it then you get what you get. Doctors and Universities, pfft.

Does Wearing Cheap SunGlasses Ruin your Eye Sight? According to doctor Wayne Bizer of the American Academy of Ophthalmology says that sunglasses without a protection are worse than having no sunglasses at all even the simple action of squinting is one better off.

There’s quite literally no science in the link you posted. It’s two dudes, of which we have no idea what their credentials are, telling you something is bad.

And it’s 10 years old

the ones before my time were 80's styles and called the Razor Blades, got the 80's style "Oakley" print on the sides and everything. A company called Pit Viper brought the style back a few years ago

A medical doctor explains it. It’s pretty simple.

All I know is, I hate the Oakleys these baseball players wear today. So fricking stupid and big. They look like ski eyewear.

I have a pair of Crankshaft shades somewhere.
My other Oakleys I had clear lenses put in them so I could use them while on the computer.

Those actually used to be popular in the 90s too. A few Miami players wore them when they got cock slapped by Warren Morris in 96

Eta: $10 sunglasses? We’ve got some broke mother frickers in this thread.

That absolutely can be true, though I think it is more rare now than it used to be to get super shitty lens.

It is possible and not unusual in the past to have cheap sunglasses filter a large percentage of visible light but transmit a large part of the UV spectrum unabated. The UV wavelengths are the ones that do the most damage. Lens that block a large percentage of the visible spectrum and not the UV spectrum are indeed worse for your eyes than no sunglasses. The reason is your pupils open and close based primarily on the intensity of visible spectrum light. So a lens that filters 80% of the visible spectrum will cause you pupils to dilate to allow more light in if those lens don't filter UV at the same rate then your eyes are actually getting bombarded by much more of the high energy spectrum light than if you didn't wear sunglasses.

As an adult I have never worn anything but high quality lens in sunglasses so I have never tried to find the breakover point. I would suggest people avoid the "$8 gas station sunglasses" because they are almost certainly made in China and do you think China is doing any testing on their lens and even if they do they won't spend even an extra couple of cents a pair to ensure UV filtering is very high.

Easton Flares FTW

also, who would go buy the cheap Oakley knockoffs at the Airline Hwy flea market in the early 2000s? You could get like 3 pair for $10 and they looked no different. The lenses would pop off though
