Old Milwaukee's Best Light

There is Old Milwaukee, and there is Milwaukee’s Best ( regular or light). Two different beers, but people often come up with Old Milwaukee's Best.

When I was a kid, I worked in a small store near the black part of town. We sold more Old Milwaukee (14 oz cans!) than any other beer.

Consumer Reports in 1996 proclaimed Old Milwaukee the best tasting beer.

quote:

DETROIT (AP) -- Could it be that Bud's been dethroned as the King of Beers? That Miller's time has come and gone?

That's what 17 trained beer tasters suggest in June's Consumer Reports magazine. Their choice for the best-tasting mass-marketed brew is that blue-collar bargain of the beer cooler, Old Milwaukee.

It was followed by Stroh's, another cheap and minimally advertised brand from Detroit's Stroh Brewery Co. Better than Budweiser, Michelob, Miller High Life and nine other national brands.

The recipe for Miller Lite is actually Meister Brau Light. The beer was rebranded to Miller Lite and we still drink it today.

In college we could get cases of Old Milwaukee Light bottles in the heavy duty cardboard waxed boxes for $7. Bottles were returnable. We'd stack the empty cases full of bottles and use them as furniture. 4 cases and a piece of plywood and you got yourself a coffee table.

Stack up the cases of bottles to return all at once for another case of beer.

Leinenkuegel's Red was the other cases they sold. $8 for a case of bottles.

Party ball tap.

I feel like they were 5 gallons, but I'm not sure. I know they had different ones, not just Coors.

I think the only time we did those was Halloween 1992, which fell on a Saturday night that year. And ours were all Coors.

The guys (all in our late 20s) threw a fantastic Halloween party that year; one guy (Randy) was living in a place that was the whole upstairs of a cool spooky old house on Esplanade with balconies and such, so he hosted.

I assigned 3 or 4 of the guys to each bring a party ball- that covered the beer. We also had liquor and wine, and plenty of good food. TONS of people came; EVERY GUEST came dressed in good costumes; the place was decorated to the nines. And everyone had a blast, it was probably the BEST HALLOWEEN EVER for me.

So, yeah, I look back kindly on the party ball...

Anybody remember Bud Select? I remember a store in Tuscaloosa had them on clearance in 2010 when it discontinued and bought as much as we could. Didn’t have to buy beer for 4-5 weeks after that.

It was my go to tailgate beer for a while. It can still be found. Bought some in South Texas a couple years ago and is definitely in the St Louis area.

Used to stick the ball in ice water n the back of a pick up. Then run the hose through the sliding rear window and cruise town during high school. Great memories.

A blast from the past!! I just looked it up and they were 5 gallons.
They have a company in NYC that sells a mini version.
Meier's Creek Brewing Co. offers 10-liter (approx. 2.6 gallons) beer balls, which require advanced ordering.
