Louisiana still suffers from what Leander Perez and Huey Long & Family did decades and decades ago.

I was there. Alabama could have/should have beaten them in the semi-final of that regional.

Marquette also gave them a great game, but Al McGuire blew his cool on the bench.

Now, back to Leander....

He was more a crook than a segregationist.....personally I hope he’s burning in hell!!!!!!!!!!

And don’t forget he was excommunicated but still buried by the Catholic Church...

My dad was a football coach at a Catholic school in the early 60’s.
His was one of the first schools that allowed a black person to play sports as this was before forced integration.
They used to play Belle Chase and Buras every year.
He received a letter from Leander Perez advising him that his team was not allowed to play schools in Plaquemines parish because he had “a player of the negroid race on his team.”

In the 60s, Perez opened three new schools in Plaquemines- Delta Heritage, Promised Land and River Oaks.

He apologized and was reinstated.

The other two segregation it's who were excommunicated with him never repented. Times-Picayune followed up with them around 2000 or so. One became a sedevacantist and the other swore off organized religion.

My dad was an oil & gas lease broker & did a lot of work in Da Parish as it was called back then. Per Parish law, every legal document filed in the Parish Courthouse had to be signed off on by Perez. With a mandatory $2 fee payable to Perez attached to the signed document. Back in the Parish's oil & gas hay days, there were 1000's of oil & gas leases alone that were filed in the Courthouse, year long, decades long. And that was just oil & gas leases. He was very much like EWE, in many ways, but their finger prints were all over anything dealing withe State ...EWE ... or Parish....Perez.

He flat out used his power to intimidate and try to ruin anyone in SELA who didn’t want to go along with his segregationist ideals.

A vile, corrupt piece of crap. All the removals of statues and renaming of streets and buildings…that is definitely one that should happen. The people of Plaquemines Parish should wipe his name off everything but legal and historical documents.

Two of my greater regrets are not sitting in on a T Harry Williams lecture, and not going to watch the '76 Indiana basketball team play in the Baton Rouge Regional.

I was fortunate enough to do both. You did miss out.
Many do not know the AC (then) hosted the Sweet 16 ad well as the regionals.

And THW class on the Civil War was awesome.

Apparently you could open a business in the parish if you wanted, but if you didn’t get permission from Judge Perez, your business wouldn’t get a dollar of income.

My dad worked on tidewater case as a law student back when... they were told before the final leather bound brief was submitted, Judge Perez needed to see the finished product. Judge Perez was told there wasn't enough time to get it to him prior to submission deadline. The Judge hung up and called back shortly. He informed them that a state trooper would be there shortly to transport back and forth. Sure enough, a trooper was there and the brief was brought down for his approval from Baton Rouge to his office in the nola area...

I'm not a lawyer, so some of the terms may be incorrect. That dude had some massive stroke.

His tidewater demands have fawked Louisiana so greatly its hard to comprehend. If we'd have taken the original deal offered Louisiana would be possibly the richest state in the union.

Famous but (maybe) apocryphal story: Overheard in a men’s room in NO —
Earl Long said to Perez : “Leander, what the hell we gonna do now that the Feds have the A-tomic bomb?”

I remember reading a book about Uncle Earl in either Parent or Carrollton class. Their was a discussion between Earl and Leander where Earl was chastising Leander about his hardline segregationist stance. Earl
supposedly asked Leander how was he going to resist the feds now that they had the A bonb.
Basically Earl was fed up with Leander and his views and didn't want Leander stance to force the feds to take action.
