Exactly. Some of those tiny towns have some excellent local businesses and restaurants. Granted, the owners aren’t going to be millionaires, but I’m sure it’s a peaceful living.

Yes. I hope to stay there someday.

Most of its dead and dilapidated now. The interstate put a lot of those places out of business.

Right, but I find “urban archaeology” fascinating. Exploring those old motor lodges and breakfast stops. I can’t get enough of that stuff. Peaceful. A different era.

I have been to Williams, Arizona which has to be the most Route 66 town

Spent two nights in Williams in the little down town area.

Also Winslow Arizona where there’s a homage to the Eagles song. Also the teepee motel that’s based off the Cozy Cone motel in Cars. Great trip that I’ll always remember.

Wait for the girl in the Ford truck.

She's apt to be more friendly.

It's just a single route between Joplin and Springfield, for the most part.
I am not finding that on the map. I am finding Joplin west to Kansas intact.

Eta- I keep threatening to my husband that I am going to buy an old motel/motor court. Even the not Route 66 ones that are restored are so cool.

It winds from Chicago to L.A. , 2000 miles along the way.

It will appear as mostly 266 and 96 on modern maps. It's also worth mentioning that there were multiple alignments, especially through towns like Springfield. The route used to go straight through the middle of downtown then was moved further north to Kearney Street (IIRC).

With Route 66 being so popular in places like Europe and Japan, I wonder if they often come here and are disappointed by it. It’s not exactly the Swiss Alps.

Once spoke to a couple from Spain who flew in to the US and then drove from Memphis to Little Rock for a wedding. They said it was the most beautiful drive they had ever experineced.

I damn near spit-taked them when they said it with 100% sincerity...

I’ve started taking a lot of the slower old highways that were built as the main routes back in the day. A lot less stress and a lot of interesting sights.

I love driving on rural 4 lane US highways. Barely any traffic. I take them all the time to avoid the interstate. Louisiana has some really nice 4 lane US highways. US 61, 425, 165, 171, 167 north of Alex, 90 south of Lafayette, 190 between BR and Eunice.
