re: Anybody ever buy a new car and have it shipped?

My last car bought was shipped from St. Louis to me in DFW. Was technically used, but only 300 miles on it. Shipping was around $300 and far cheaper than flying and driving back.
First it is new, so really nothing to worry about, everything is under warranty. If you want peace of mind, have them photo and video the areas you would look at specifically.
You can pay insurance for travel and then inspect it upon delivery. There is a 99% chance it arrives fine and no issues.
It is going to be cheaper or maybe even, to just fly in and pick it up. If you have reservations just do that. One way flights are not that expensive to DFW from New Orleans.

When do you actually sign the paperwork for the car? Before or after delivery?
Before delivery. The paperwork signing would take place online, but I don’t know the exact details of how.
From my understanding, after I sign the paperwork, the car would be picked up by the transporter, be at my driveway within 48 hours.
I’m not worried about not getting right color or wrong trim level because the VIN would be on the paperwork, and I could look up the VIN and it would tell me the color, trim level, etc.

I did some of mine electronically, but a few docs had to be signed and returned via Fed Ex. Did an EFT via Chase Bank for the payment. All of this happened prior to delivery. Truck was delivered to my home via a car hauler. Ole boy had about four other vehicles on his hauler. I'm sure they just hire the cheapest hotshot delivery they can.

Pro tip to any and all making an inquiry like this:
Please title it "Tell me about your experience with X" or "Ease my concerns about X" or something. Yes, somebody has done whatever X is. That isn't the question you are asking.
Yes, I have ordered a few cars and had them shipped to my house, both new and used. Absolutely zero concern doing it with a new one and very little concern doing it with a used one. It's going to take a unique set of circumstances for me to not exercise that option every time from now on. Disclaimer - this was always regular ol cars or trucks. I wouldn't do it for a ferrari.
It's a simple transaction. Don't sweat it, especially for a brand new car with a warranty. What are you concerned about? That you won't like it?

I haven't personally, but my parents have done it twice. They just got a Toyota Grand Highlander with all of the running boards and extra shite. It took about three months, but the process was pretty flawless.

bought one from up north without seeing it in person
worked out fine, but was definitely more expensive to ship than yours was to ship, about double
There was some minor damage but I was able to just bring it to a local dealer and they handled the repair for free

I've done it twice with *used* cars. Both from Florida which has 10x the selection Louisiana does, apparently.
The first time doesn't really count because I had my brother (no pics) who lives out of state go check it out and test drive it for me first. That transaction went well. I bought it from some guy who had a small lot on the equivalent of Airline Highway and he was super upfront & responsive.
The second time we rolled the dice and bought my wife a specific model she wanted from a dealership in Miami, sight unseen. We felt a little more confident because it was new enough to still have warranty. That was a clusterfrick. These idiots didn't send us the title, and she was back and forth with them for like three weeks getting transferred around and ignored. I had to call the company's *general counsel* in Washington just to get the fricking title. Once she found out she was dealing with a graduate of the Paul M Hebert Law Center she knew not to frick around and they overnighted it to us asap.
Car was in good shape though.

My dad bought a Porsche that he built on the internet and picked it up from the port.

I bought a car that was in transit from the manufacturer to the dealership near me. I put down $500 I think to reserve it. I cannot recall for sure but I think I lost the $500 if I chose not to buy it, but I do know for sure I didn't lose any more than that, e.g., I was not obligated to buy it.
I also tried buying a used SUV from CARMAX as a second vehicle and found one in AZ I liked (I'm in TX). But in that case I was required to buy it even it I did not like it when it arrived at my house so it was a no go.

you can get people to look at them in person, but I've never heard someone do that for a new car.
I ship antique cars from time to time, never had an issue. It is the way to go. I hire a car guy to inspect the vehicle, someone with more expertise than me in most cases.

If the dealer orders it from the factory they c AC n have it shipped to a dealer near you as a courtesy delivery. The delivering dealer gets paid to do the pre delivery service and make it shine.
Not every dealer is willing to deliver another dealers sale in their own market but many think why not. They get paid to deliver it and the customer may like the service and do business there for maintenance and such.

I usually fly and drive one back. This time I had it delivered from California. Cost me 2k. Lots of Russians in the transport business. Guy was supposed to update his coordinates on pickup and en route and he did neither. No text or call until day of.
We met at academy parking lot. Dmitri drove it off truck, I signed his handheld. And that was that. He said maybe 2 words. Shady but was clean delivery. Almost like ordering a pizza. You should be good. Really common nowadays.

Wanted a very specific vehicle, easier to buy it used. Carmax shipped it from Denver to San Antonio where I completed the paper work. Easy

Wife had to have her new Tesla delivered a few years ago when she bought one, they had no dealerships around here then.
That was a weird experience. Pick-up for a truckload of Teslas was set up at 7:30 PM in a Walmart parking lot. About a dozen buyers standing around in the parking lot awaiting delivery, then the truck pulls in, with all the folks saying things like, " ooh that white one is mine!" "That blue one with the special wheels is mine".
Truck driver offloaded them one after the other, checked names and did some brief paperwork for each car and then handed off each card key and everyone drove off with their new cars...
