re: Anybody ever buy a new car and have it shipped?

Bought 2 sight unseen- a 2008 Escalade with 40K miles in 2010 and a 2017 Jeep Wrangler with 39k miles in 2021.
If it’s new/gently used, I wouldn’t hesitate, especially if you have access to pictures/video so you can readily identify defects. The Jeep had a dented bumper that I saw on the video- dealership put a new bumper on before they delivered it.
Just make sure you can refuse delivery if something isn’t as pictured/described

I’ve done it 4 times. Never had a problem.

I had a Mazda shipped from Houston. The only one that checked all of the boxes for me. $399 to ship it to middle TN and was exactly as advertised. Busy time of year for me when I bought it, otherwise I would have flown out and drove it back.

You can refuse delivery if it doesn’t check out at delivery. You might be out $399 though.

Just get it shipped. A bud from MSY flew one way to Houston to pick up a truck and drove it back, but that was combined with hanging out at my house. I bought a Nissan from Mississippi through a Baton Rouge dealer that some dude just drove down, and drove the "exchange" back to Mississippi.
I've also bought multiple vehicles (from Ford.com) that get delivered via train, then truck, that I pick up locally. There's not going to be any rando damage. Everyone in the supply chain is going to take 50 pictures of the vehicle to prove if there is any damage, they didn't do it.

I had a boss, his wife was a doctor and he at least spent like they had a lot of money, but he and his wife went to Europe, bought a BMW, drove it around Europe then had it shipped back home. I want to say it was shipped somewhere in Florida, he flew to Tampa, took a taxi to wherever he had to pick the car up from.
He was the type who did it all just so he could tell people that's what he did. But I have never bought a new vehicle and had it shipped.

I've done it twice. Buy from a reputable dealer and do your homework. The shipping is the easiest part. Make sure you buy a good vehicle with no crash history, lots of pics, and ask for a video.
One time a paid for a service that test drove the car for me and sent me a report. Didn't buy the car because the inspection wasn't great.

No, but I found the exact car I wanted online at a dealership in Dallas. I was living in Houston at the time, my wife took me to the airport, I took a $85 flight to Dallas. Salesperson picked me up at the airport, took me to the dealership and bought the car. Drove it back to Houston. Easy peasy.

Clearly you weren't on I-45
I am always amazed that people talk about the intra Texas train when there's a flight between HOU and DAL every 30 minutes.

I did it. Lived in Illinois and bought an SUV in Miami. Pretty easy process. The only issue I had was the dealership had taken out the Navigation card and I called them and they immediately mailed it to me. The SUV was shipped with some other cars so when the guy got to my house he had some other cars he was hauling with it. I don’t remember what I paid to have it shipped but it was def worth it.
If you have good pictures, have the car fax report, and know exactly what you want, I think it’s fine buying a car without test driving it first. I’d def do it again if the exact model/color/mileage/price is far away from you

It is going to be cheaper or maybe even, to just fly in and pick it up. If you have reservations just do that. One way flights are not that expensive to DFW from New Orleans.

Yeah, the manufacturer of the car I’m considering does recommend a break in protocol that does not include driving 400 miles at highway speeds from Texas to NOLA.

I bought a truck online and dealer shipped free. When it got to my house if I didn’t like it I could send it back. As far as my trade in I sent them a few pics and they took it without seeing it in person.

That's pretty much Car Max and Carvana's business model

Had this done a few years back. Dealership had one guy drive my new car, and his wife followed in a chase car.
They sat down at our kitchen table, had a cup if coffee with us, and I signed the paperwork. Then they grabbed their coats and left, after a pleasant conversation.
10/10, would recommend. Dealership had everything exactly as it should have been when the couple showed up.

I’m having to buy a new car at the moment because a deer finished off my 2016 Camry I was driving for 10 years. I have a 2003 Tacoma TRD and a 21 F150 but I need to replace my car and holy crap I forgot how much I hate this process. I’m looking at civics, Mazda 3 and some others but what I’m running into is nobody wants to deliver the car to me. They don’t want to deal over email. It’s all “when can you come in and test drive?” And I reply back “when can you give me an otd price?”

You're talking to the wrong dealers. You should have no issues fully working out a deal online in 2026

On a NEW car? Go for it. Why not. Dealers do it all the time when you walk in and want a vehicle they don't have in stock. When they say "they can get it". They don't mean from the end of the assembly line. They find it at another dealer.
A USED one? If there is no warranty remaining.. definitely get an independent inspection from a competent mechanic. Then, go for it.

I had a vehicle I owned shipped from San Diego to NOLA when I was working there and it went off without a hitch. But I still have some reservations about buying a new car sight unseen.
Nothing to worry about as long as the dealer takes responsibility of the shipping and the company they use. I've bought cars and had them shipped several times. Only other thing that I usually request is that if you bought anything optional, like floor mats or whatever, just ask for a photo of everything you paid for stored in the car before it ships. Just so you know that everything you paid for is safely in tow.
There is a Honda dealer in Pittsburgh that does incredible pricing. I've bought three cars there and had them shipped to North Carolina. Ended up costing less than any deal that I was offered locally. Never had any issues.
Otherwise, it's a new car with a warranty, it's just like any other vehicle that you'd have delivered. If they're gving you a great price, go for it.

So far I’m 0-3 for the feelers I’ve contacted. They all want to get me to come in.
