I think that's a trait among business people in general.

Textiles and fabrication. Maybe it’s just this industry, but the handful I deal with are that way.

NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL SOMEONE SELLS SOMETHING.
There is a reason salespeople are some of the highest paid.
You cannot overpay a commissioned salesperson.
Not everyone is cut out for it.

People beat the sales reps down all day. Only some can keep their spirits high.

I've tried all kinds of sales and it's not my thing. I rarely believe in a product enough to push it and can't fake it.

Man I’m sorry for you. I’m in O&G and my vendors are part of the reason I don’t look for another job. But I think that’s just part of the oilfield. Even in shitty times, we have fun. The level of fun just gets better when things are good. I wouldn’t do business with the people you’ve described.

I sell and I’m all kinds of alive inside! I love sales.

I’m in sales. It has allowed me to become a positive thinker, resilient, a problem solver, an effective communicator; service minded, a good listener and self motivated.
Dead inside? No

There’s a lot of different types of “sales” jobs.
I’m not insincere in what I sell, and I sometimes lose orders b/c I don’t play the game and lie, or bend the truth. Those losses are usually a reminder of how stupid some people are. Not being arrogant, as I lose jobs on my own merit as well, just that stupid people buy from the slick salesman.
I also think I win orders b/c my customers trust me.
I sell a highly technical product, with the market leader. I rarely ever talk about my competition. There is no way I could work for the smaller guys with inferior products. That would be miserable.

I’ve looked for other suppliers, but no one can come close to getting me the product I need at the price I’m currently getting it at. For now I’m just going to have to keep putting up with it.
Sounds like you’ve got some good ones, but I’ve heard some O&G vendors are the same way. I can’t remember the name of the company in BR that sells tools for O&G, but they had a legendary douchebag selling for them. The stories about this guy even made it to our industry. He didn’t last long.

Everything Teddy said.
The only sales job I hated was my first one—the “cutting your teeth” B2B job. I only hated it because our client services sucked and I always felt bad for my clients, trying to go above and beyond to solve problems that I really couldn’t.
Once I got into medical sales with a great company, I never experienced that again.
I feel like the OP is only referring to car salesman or lower end sales types.

I started out in sales and it’s the easiest money I’ve ever made. I miss it sometimes. I like working with the public and if you aren’t a total idiot you can sell to anyone without being shady.
But not everyone is cut out for dealing with people and convincing them of the benefit of their product.

There is retail sales mostly to ignorant people who will believe things that aren't true but because they like the way it sounds. I've been in buying/selling/brokering much of my life but to other businesses who already know what they want. It's more of a finding the right market for me and then automatic. Unfortunately, web based competition by companies that don't know Shiite from shinola have muddied the market and they always fail. Engineered items don't do well that way.

I’ve been in sales my whole life in one form or another. In my 20s and 30s I probably did die inside pretending to care about my company’s goods and services. The death comes when you are not true to who you are in some respect- it makes you feel like a phony- and thus no matter how successful you are at the job it still leaves you feeling hollow. Then I just found the right gig - the ones the personality tests told me matched me but that I resisted . Now I’m in the PERSUASION business. And my Craft energizes me, brings me into daily contact with people that I make deep connections with and that thank me and that benefit from having sought my expertise.
What I’m saying is it has to be an extension of your Ethical beliefs and also tap into your authentic self . Then you can really prosper while helping people. You approach it with the heart of a teacher/counselor/friend instead of as a carnivore. And the more people sense you actually like them the more they will invest back into you.
