You deal with a lot of real estate stuff. My attorney is a small town lawyer and that is the bulk of his practice.

What do you consider a small town?
This is actually a good question b/c I'm thinking places like Jennings (9,372), Crowley (11,272), or DeRidder (9,594). If you get smaller than that, I don't know if you really have attorneys, at least in South LA.

And defend guys like Carl Lee Haley for murder to get paid $900. Nah

The problem with being a small town attorney is all too often, you need to get into the good ole boy network to get real work.

Yeah, got a cousin who does this.
She loves it. Trades her small town life as a big fish in a small pond for less money, but is happy and the living is cheap.

Small town lawyer, Bobby Lee Cook LINK to trial lawyer hall of fame
quote:
For more than 6 decades, Bobby Lee Cook has been one of the most successful and influential defense attorneys in the country. He has tried thousands of cases, including more than 300 murder trials. His clients have ranged from bootleggers and moonshiners, to white collared elites including members of the Rockefeller and Carnegie families. Regarded as one of the South’s best-known defense attorneys, it is widely believed that Andy Griffith’s character in the television series “Matlock” was based on the professional life of Bobby Lee Cook. In addition to criminal proceedings, Cook also took a stand by representing labor unions at a time when many in the South viewed pro-labor organizations as “Communist sympathizers.”

The era of specialization (not quite, but mostly) killed the general practice attorney.
Keeping up with all the vagueries of transactions, wills/estates, family law, plus at least a little litigation is quite a bit for a solo practitioner.

I dont know if we have more than 2 "big law" in Louisiana; Baker Donelson and maybe Jones Walker if you consider them such.
We have a litany of regional power firms though.
Taylor Porter, Butler Snow, Phelps Dunbar, Brezeale, McGlinchey Stafford, Kean Miller, Adams Reese, and maybe Liskow

Saul Litvinoff used to advise students to hang a shingle in a small town after law school. He said you'll starve for 5 years, but then you can spend the rest of your life vacationing in Europe every year.

have heard there is a real shortage of small town attorneys. How big of an issue is this? I think it would be fun to be a small town lawyer. One of the well respected members of the community (assuming you don’t do anything scummy). I like living in small towns and it seems like one of the few jobs that it would actually be feasible to live pretty much wherever you want. Also, you could probably go to any old law school? Just don’t wind up in a ton of debt.
There may be shortage but certainly not in Louisiana. We have no shortage of attorneys ready to find a settlement

Insurance defense has problems, but if you want to do civil litigation and be on the defense side, I don't see how you can avoid it, at least not completely. Most litigated losses are insured losses, especially in Louisiana where we have a disproportionately high number of auto suits. Morris Bart has an army lawyers, so it takes a corresponding army to defend all of those claims.

World needs less lawyers not more. Problem is most judges were former lawyers. One of the biggest self-licking ice cream cones out there. If judges would throw out all frivolous ambulance chasing suits, the world would be a much better place.

Look for a small town with only one lawyer. There is an old saying that if there is only one lawyer in town, he'll starve, if there are two, they both get rich.

I was thinking 5-20k range. So, not “real small towns” necessarily

Maybe not a shortage of personal injury, but i definitely wouldn’t do that anyway

It'll be tough to maintain a practice without doing any P.I. work.
