If you have a yard and are moderately active at least, Brittany, hands down. Just super smart, great size for traveling, wrestling, etc., but doesn't go through a giant bag of food in 2 weeks.
Very loyal. Looks to please. Would definitely train, but man my dog is amazing.
Would also vouch for Aussies and Vislzas. I like dogs in the 40- 55lb. Range. Not too big, but can run, hike, etc.

Breeder recs? I’ve been thinking about getting one after our lab passed last year. Looking for a smaller pup like these.

A German Shepherd mutt mix I adopted from the lower ninth ward. I went there looking for a friend’s dog that had gotten loose. I found one I wanted, and they didn’t want me to take her at first because they said she was a biter.

If you want a dog with a great disposition that will love you (and everyone else) to death, this is the answer.

German Shepherds are the best dogs.
There is no alternative, no comparison, nothing.
Its a mans mans dog and will gladly lay his/her life down for you.
Loyal, Friendly, Fierce,
I'd almost put them in their own class of animal. Their ability to read and adapt to their human makes them exceptional in the canine world. There is nothing like it. Plus they are incredible around your children.
They;ll understand you better than anyone in your family.
I've always felt like every endearing quality you want to see in a friend, you'll find in a German Shepherd. The things we respect, they have. Loyalty, fun, powerful, gentle, sweet, vicious, industrious, caring...

The ones I adopted. Old or young, they were all good.

Had many dogs over the years. All were rescues. They are the best!
Many breed specific rescue organizations exist. Give them a try.

Doberman, looked liked the AR-15 of dogs but he was actually a big baby and great with our newborn/toddler.

If I could bring back one for a day it would be my Black Lab. They were all great.

My 18 year old beagle/terrier rescue dog just passed 2 weeks ago. Wife and the kids loved him, but he was my little buddy. Ran many miles with me. Kayaked. Fished. Hung with me around the grill. Always at my feet. Followed me anywhere.
