True csb. I had a huge Rottweiler charge me once out of nowhere from behind a house. My initial thought was to run, but he was on me so fast that I knew I wouldn't get away. So, I charged back towards him and cocked my fist back as if I was going to punch him. He stopped dead in his tracks, tucked his tail and back peddled off. He was massive and could of easily taken me down, but I think he got startled and surprised and didn't know what to do when I came back at him, so he backed off. Three other people witnessed this and they all said they thought I was a goner.

interesting suggestions up in this thread. I just hope if I'm ever in a situation to need the info I can remember it.

Our decent neighborhood butts up against another subdivision whose houses & owners are not quite as nice. 6-8 months ago the house behind ours (separated by their wooden fence) sold, and the new owners often keep their dog chained up in the backyard. I haven't had more than a glimpse of this dog, but I'm 90% sure its a pit.

In the 6 months they've lived there, their fence has deteriorated little by little. Broken board here, misaligned place there. Every time my little kids are playing outside I worry that dog is going to go Bruce Banner on that fence and grab one of my kids.

So thanks for the reminder to call a fence company tomorrow about getting our own fence installed.

Hot dog and antifreeze would do better.

and that's a lot cheaper than a $5000 fence. Don't think the thought has not crossed my mind.

When I used to ride an ATB through old Mandeville, Abita, Covington & Lacombe (peripherally to the Trace) there were a couple of instances where dogs didn't know the law. I kept a squirt gun loaded with vinegar on the handlebars to help them learn.

The dumb ones do it and get the vinegar eye bath a couple of times, the smarter ones learn from the first time.

The pH difference in their eyes gets their quick and full attention.

This is about the worst thing you can do to a dog to turn it into a monster. Chaining it up creates bad anxiety in dogs, which makes fear based attacks significantly more likely.

It's a fricking dog. Any grown man that can't fight off a dog is better off getting eaten anyway.

This.

Worst case scenario I let him have my left arm while I slice him to ribbons with my right.

Yeah yeah, everybody has a plan until they have a 60lb ball of snarling muscle and teeth crushing thier arm. Oh and for a little added bonus, a pit doesn't react to pain when he is in attack mode.

Police Freeze-P. Baton Rouge police supply on mall blvd by cortana.

I've stopped a charging pit dead in his tracks. U-turned and left a smokin train behind him.

Don't aim for the eyes, spray it right up his snout and mouth.

Machete works well too, but I ain't telling that story on the OT.

My parents raised bullmastiffs.... Had to break up fights a couple times a year. If you get a free shot try to kick it in the ribs... Try to break the frickers too. They won't be able to breathe. You should be able to knock the head out of the way on the first bite of your ready for it and not running from it and there is your chance.
These dogs are strong, but if you can get hold of them use your weight to your advantage. Even bullmastiffs give up eventually and they are every bit as strong if not stronger than the pits when it comes to good sized males. Plus like he other poster said.... Be dominant. They are animals and will recognize when they aren't the alpha in the situation.

I've come across a few loose dog while running but never a pit bull. They took off running at me and when I noticed I became the aggressor and they have always stopped and backed down.

I think this is the reason pits have a bad reputation. They go crazy and don't follow the logic of other dogs. They don't get the hint to back down.

I do however think a grown man can get through an attack. I don't know if I've ever seen a story of a grown man being killed by a pit. It's always a small child or lady.
