When it gets to this kind of amount, yes, I foolishly waste my $2 in an attempt to never have to look at the Money Board again. I may buy a ticket once every 2-3 years so I don't think it will quite hurt my bank account.

My mother on the other hand, she buys the powerball religiously and has for well over 20 years.....I think the luck on her side of the family has run out though since a distant cousin won the Kentucky lotto 15 years or so ago.

Buy Powerball instead. Everyone is buying MegaMillions tickets, your chances will be better.

ETA: Someone I met actually believed this strategy

Actually they will probably “win” something. Assuming at least 10 of the tickets have the powerball number correct they will “win” $20.

I think it’s funny that we all buy tickets when the jackpot gets huge. 50 million is not good enough. I’m gonna wait until it’s over a billion

There was a court case a while back where one of those pools won, and the person who bought the ticket claimed it was a separate one she bought for herself. IDK how it turned out.

Generally on those pools you make a copy of all the tickets so everyone gets a print out. It’s shouldn’t be hard to determine what was for personal use and what was for the group.

If the odds are 1 in 300 million and the pool purchases 500 different numbers the odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 299,999,500, a statistically insignificant decrease in the odds.

Usually the pool groups are a clusterfrick after they win. Lawsuit after lawsuit

you do know there's lower prizes right? That's what we're referring to. They'll likely win a few of those

We have a group of 20 people at work who pay $20 each week it's their turn, so basically $50/person/year. When it's your turn, you spend $10 on the first half of the week and $10 on the weekend draws, however you want to distribute between Powerball and MegaMillions. Usually everyone just picks the higher jackpot. You take a pic of the lottery tickets for the group each week before the drawing and send it out as a group email. Any winnings <$100 gets redistributed for more tickets.

I've gotten 2 winning MegaMillions tickets in the past, hitting 4 numbers...which only paid out $150 each time. It was the worst odds-to-payout ratio of any winning scenario.
