My friends dad had one misfire out the side of the tube, point blank to the face. I quit fricking with Roman Candles after that.

frick yes. We did both. BB gun wars we only did a couple of times before graduating to paintball. Bottle rocket wars, on the other hand, we did quite a few times. We used the little bitty rockets and Roman candles, but we also used a few of the big rockets that would probably have killed someone had we managed to hit anyone with them. Good times! Until we set a field on fire, that is. We managed to get it out, but after that we stuck to paintball.

Here’s a bonus song that a band from Tuscaloosa put out in the 90’s regarding this very subject:

Pain - Bottlerocket War

I got shot in the middle of the back with a Roman candle as a teenager. I still have the scar.

I mean I understand that a gun is a gun, but a bottle rocket is a freaking missile. Not any different really.

All small stuff. In the fifties, we had a cannon.

Put a silver salute in a piece of pipe, with a hole drilled for the fuse. Jam the back end in the mud, put a rock or two down the pipe, aim and light.

We did it all the time on the westbank. Lots of fun unless someone's parents got after us.

My younger cousin from Orange Texas lost an eye in the early 90s in a bottle rocket war. He's the only casualty I know personally...

ETA- my neighborhood had vacant lots and before each new house went in piles of dirt were added. Between the dirt delivery and slab pouring, dirt clod wars broke out daily. There was a lot of clay and coal in that river sand and they were prize weapons. Had I joined the marines, I could been a hell of a grenadier.

See, that crap is fun. I loved those days.
And yes I'm a father now and I won't even think about letting my son do crap like that.

Exactly. I know I'm being a hypocrite, but I would kill my kids if I found them doing it. LOL

We used to have them around Philadelphia, MS when i was a teenager in the 90s. Got hit in the right eye one time and was blind for two weeks. Mom was pissed and said i was never going to shoot bottle rockets again. Next Christmas we had another war and my dad just made me wear a pair of safety glasses. We used artillery shells as well. Good times.

At my house it was like a holiday ritual. Uncles, cousins, ironically no females. Teams sometimes, on your own most times.

Yep.... plug the end of a big piece of pipe, drop in an M80, dump a can of pea gravel on top, lean it out at an angle and kaboom! Instant cannon!

M80s in the early 70s were dangerous as hell.

We used to throw tape bottle rockets to our bikes and hurry up and hurry and pedal fast to zoom off.

Set off smoke bombs and a bunch of sparklers and walk through it like Goldberg from WCW......or Chris Jericho

Shoot roman candles at each other.

Throw black cats at each other.

We had penny rocket wars in the early 70s. I would tuck a button up shirt in, unbutton right above the belt and put a couple dozen loose rockets in for easy access. Once my brother ran up with a rocket that broke off the stick, hollered hand grenade and thew it. Landed right in my shirt and all hell broke loose. Had a big arse blister around my navel for a long time. Made sure Mom never knew.

Absolutely yes on both. BB gun wars out in the woods in north louisiana hills. Middle of summer and we would wear two pair of jeans and insulated coveralls and sunglasses to protect the eyes. Safety first. Red ryder bb guns and those guys with benjamins could only pump once. Benjamins were more accurate but i could light somebody up many times over with a red ryder with lever action. Even with all those clothes it still stung. We quit after many wars when one of the guys got shot in the temple and it went under the skin and we couldnt get it back out. Scared his mom wpuld find out i made a slit with a razor blade and popped it out like a zit.

Those were fun times. Sometimes we would have 20 kids battling it out.

Parents smoked in the car too

My parents used to drink in the car driving up to our lakehouse, with us in the back...in the snow, at night. One time they were doing all of the above and smoked a dear head on at 55 mph. Spilled SoCo all over the dashboard. Some guy came by with a station wagon and asked if he could take the deer. The 80s man.
