Should've skipped the conference entirely, partied on your company's dime, and then taken a week off after you returned home.

Here's an example from my history-

I have work travel that takes me to Canada.

The most efficient flight itinerary to return home is early AM travel.

I get on a plane in Canada at 5:00 AM (EST, so 4:00 AM my time), make a connection and get to work for 10:30 AM here in the South.

I stay at work until 4:00 PM.

Doing that is one of the ways you get to be (or stay) the boss.

If my trip involves Sunday travel and a late return, I always take the next day.

He went above and beyond by traveling on Sunday and flying home late Thursday to save the company money.

Why would I not take the time off that I have earned and that the company promised me I could have as a part of our "contract"?

Go frick yourself. There are tons of people who's jobs were outsourced who were everything you say workers should be. Tell me companies are gonna stop outsourcing and even worse, bringing in Immigrants from fricking Pakistan and Ethiopia to pad profits and then we'll discuss concessions in my vacation time and sick days.

He's probably an old timer or government worker who got/gets to roll over unlimited vacation and sick days.

Unless you can accrue unlimited hours and get paid for them upon leaving or retiring, not taking pto is incredibly dumb, and any employer worth a shite would tell you that. This is coming from someone who works part of each day of vacation and still gets to come back from vacation to built up work and extra stress.

Are you serious? Why the hell would you not take your vacation days? Unless they pay out the hours, you're a fool not to use them.

I bet your company loves you. They know that you're easy to take advantage of.

Actually, Americans have been getting screwed in the workplace for decades compared to every other industrialized nation. Even fry cooks in most first world countries get 6 weeks paid vacation.

This is true.
All this "company man" shite has gotten old.
A lot of hours to TRY or HOPE to be the boss? Are you kidding me? What's life for? To have some middle management title that no one outside your company has a damn clue what you do?
This country needs more time off. (Teachers not included )

We didn't become the best nation because we take a fricking siesta everyday and decide if we want to go back in to work or not.

You guys act like the Chinese and Japanese are a bunch of fricking lazy bumbs.

You can absolutely be great at your job and not have to do all that extra bullshite while they are laughing at you for being the best ballbag moistener in the office. If they can't see your worth in normal working hours then you need another job.

I work every bit as hard as they people in my job before me. Except, maybe, for the fact that technology has made certain aspects of my job easier. Though I'm also more accessible than ever before, so that makes it harder.

If anything, I may be better at my job. I'm making sure that our crumbling infrastructure is built correctly this time, instead some of the half assed work I've seen all around Nola metro, and plenty of other cities across the country.
