I know. I spent my first 30 years in NOLA with far worse criminal events than a car break-in. Moved to Mandeville/Madisonville...not a single event. It is a night and day difference.

Not sure what you define bigger cities as, but I leave the roof off of my Jeep under covered (but not enclosed) parking in Lafayette and have never had anything stolen from it.

Happened to me 4 times in a 5 year period. Twice they stole very expensive stereo systems. Finally I said the hell with it and bought a cheap stereo, then they stole that one.

I’m guessing I meant New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport

I think it happens more in Nola because of all of the street parking.

It happens in most larger US cities. Y’all really think smash and grabs are just a NOLA thing?

I was really referring to Nola vs BR or Shreveport.

It certainly happens here (BR) too but more often at apartments and businesses. Most people here in houses park in driveways, carports, garages which seem to get far less action.

Yeah, I’m with you there.

Does seem like there is a contingent of people here who think smash and grabs are a uniquely Nola thing. Happens in Houston and Atlanta all the time as well, like you said, mainly bc of the street parking.

......wash your hands and the inside of your car thoroughly. Then give thanks you didn't walk up on the cockroaches as they were rummaging through your car.

I wish people could bait these SOBs, like some kind of boobie trap or a nice bullet in the arse without facing consequences. Not only would you go to jail, but the perp would sue you for everything you own.

It doesn’t happen as much in Baton Rouge because Baton Rouge is a more spread out city and the shite neighborhoods aren’t next door to the nice neighborhoods.

It’s better to leave the door unlocked and put a sign up that says the door is unlocked. Sad but true.

I can recall a handful of vehicle burglaries reported on Nextdoor in our neighborhood in the 6 years we've been here. I'd guess probably just as many happened but weren't posted on there.

They tend to generally happen to people who left their doors unlocked though. We get some handle pullers occasionally but very few full window smashes.

I've had my car broken into a few times while I was in baton rouge. Even my house once. Haven't had it happen once in Nola.

But I also don't ever leave anything in there.

That’s great - when my car window was broken was the only time in 25 years did I call NOPD - then I moved to Baton Rouge - and that was a whole different story

. In 1998 I bought a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was stolen from the front of my house when I had it only 5 days.

That sucks - for some reason we were lucky and had no problems in mid city -although bienville and Carrollton had a lot more people walking around and up to no good

Although my sisters purse was stolen from her work and her car broken into twice in Metairie while she was at work

Although in the late 90s/early 2000s - Chryslers and Dodges were THE car to steal
