If you get tired of Tex Mex Schneider's German Gasthaus & Beergarden was something different to do in the area. I haven't been since 2019 so not sure how much it's changed.

Entirely false. McAllen and Mission are very safe and enjoyable cities.

Hidalgo, Weslaco, Mercedes, and Donna, less so. Go to more expensive areas and you’ll avoid the problems.

Brownsville is in the middle (tier wise) of that but not as bad as people could make it out to be.

Just remembered that there’s another decent chain restaurant that worth hitting up for beers and food.

Yard House. Vampire tacos.

I started making tacos in my home like that and my family lost their minds over how good they are.

I’ve heard the dove hunting is good down there. I’ll be heading down that way. I’ll be going down this weekend!

Been going down there since 1990. By far the safest border town, Neuvo Progreso, take Hwy 1015 south, park and walk across. Disco is the Mexican Walmart. The best restaurant, Auturo’s. They speak good English and you can use US currency.

On the states side, the town of Harlingen has a nice museum.

Iwo Jima Museum

They have a WalkOns a little North of McAllen. They have a number of restaurants in Mc. But I mostly eat across the border.

If you plan to cross the border, let me know, I know people in the town. You can get medicine without a Rx. But you are limited to a few months worth to bring back. The only thing they ask at the border for is liquor and tobacco, you have to pay an import tax.

Thanks for all the recs. Supposed to eat dinner tonight with the board at a place called The Patio.

Will definitely check out Salt and El Devino throughout the week. Who knows, may get a wild hair and walk in Twin Peaks on my solo night.

Will also check out Mission Trail for a morning run. Looks like the Courtyard by the airport has a really nice hotel gym as well.

Osos Locos seems a little too sketchy/risky for my liking esp on a work trip. I’m sure crossing the border is fine most cases, but I want to ensure I return to my family in one piece.

Will update the OT as I navigate my journey.

What’s the cost of living like like down there? Is housing a lot more reasonable than the big cities in Texas?

Also, what are the industries that are driving this boom down there in which towns are really booming?

I’m just curious as I know some of the other parts of Texas pretty well but don’t know much of anything about the border region.

With a good job you can do well although a new home in a new neighborhood on the north side will be pretty expensive. But there really aren’t a lot of bad neighborhoods. You have to go deep in the trenches.

Medical, tech, agriculture, entertainment, space x, infrastructure

The big 3 is Brownsville, Harlingen and McAllen. Pretty much the whole area is connected via the expressways these days. I remember growing up there was space between each city. Edinburg and Mission and the whole PSJA (pharr/san juan/alamo) area have been booming.

Yep. my grandma lived in Harlingen from 1983 til 1990. And my aunt and cousins lived in McAllen. We used to spend the summer and X-mas holidays there. Beautiful memories, not sure how much it has changed now. But I always thought the Rio Grande Valley was perfect for kids or retirees.

Yeah. When I started going there it was a bit of space between PSJA (only a person that has been to the valley and had anything to do with the schools would know that) and Donna/ Weslaco and then again till Mercedes/Harlingen.

No the only spot with space is between San Benito and Brownsville.

San Antonio to Austin is getting that way.

One thing about the RGV is it is seriously hot and humid as shite. Like SIGNIFICANTY worse than even SE TX or Louisiana. I was there in April and it felt like June feels in South Louisiana. The heat is no f’n joke. Worst place I’ve ever been for that. Probably worst in the country.

Go to south padre island.
Go to the wildlife refuge place. Bird watching.

That’s all I got. Find some landowners and shoot some doves or hogs.
