The SARS outbreak of 2003 was caused by a coronavirus as well. It sickened about 8,000 people worldwide and had a mortality rate of about 10%.
Middle East respiratory syndrome was a coronavirus that was first identified in 2012. In the 7 years since discovery, it has sickened 2,468 with a mortality rate of 34.5%.
Only time will tell on which end of the spectrum this one will be on.
