re: Dad has Stage 3 Kidney Disease: How concerned should we be?

A lot of the patients I see have stage 3ckd and most of them don’t know it. For some reason, doctors will put it in the diagnosis list but either they don’t explain it well or the patients just don’t absorb it. From what I’ve seen, you can live forever (until you die of something unrelated) as long as it doesn’t progress to stage 4. If that happens, it’s dialysis, transplant, or death. Stage 3 ckd is almost always caused by diabetes or hypertension in the patients i see. Stay on top of the cause (keep blood pressure and/or sugar under control), and you stop the progression. I’m a midlevel healthcare provider.

Still don't understand why people have to feel impending death to do this. It isn't that hard.

It's not holier than though. You know the issues are coming if you live a certain lifestyle, yet once they finally hit people will do a total 180.
Why not just do the shite in the first place and not have to deal with diabetes or kidney disease? You end up giving up booze and eating right anyway, but you now have to deal with endless doctors appointments, dialysis, an insulan pump, etc. It makes no sense.
And all of that is before we talk about you feeling like shite for two decades and not even knowing it. Listen to everyone that's lost a lot of weight. To a man, they talk about how much better they feel and how much energy they have, and they didn't even realize when they were overweight how shitty they actually felt.
If that makes me holier than thou, then sure. But you frickers need to hear that shite. This board has devolved into CPAP, cirrhosis of the liver and kidney disease threads.

Kidney disease sucks but it is manageable for a VERY long time.
My son grew up from 2 years old to 25 years old with 0 kidney function. Dialysis sucked and was hard, but you can still live a hell of a good life on it.
You are a long way from dialysis. Do the thing to make the changes to not let any further damage happen and live a long fruitful life.

It’s hard for some. Usually starts out when people are young and feel invincible. They do things that feel good I.e drugs, alcohol, eat bad food and because they’re young they don’t feel negative effects. They lie to themselves and think “I can stop whenever or I’ll stop when I’m 30 or when I’m 40 and I’ll be fine.” Some do have the self control to stop bad habits after they sow their wild oats. But many do not, and they keep doing it even when they start to feel the effects. Hell some do it even when there is impending death. My grandmother is 82 and has smoked a pack or 2 a day since she was 16. She has copd and is on oxygen but she still smokes, she says hell I’ve made it to 82 why stop now

Gonna need to watch your diet, blood pressure and diabetes if present
this is important, but also watch out for certain types of meds like NSAIDs. use tylenol not motrin aleve etc.

You're slightly overweight.
I was 6' 2" 165, but I have a skinny build. My dad was 6'-0" and 185, and he was lean - and I mean VERY lean. At 6'- 0" and 187 pounds, TrapperJohn might, or might not, be overweight.

He's overweight, he may not have high body fat.
Overweight is a binary decision tree. Yes or no

I have had it for almost 5 years. It is caused by high blood pressure. Get him on blood pressure medicine with the quickness. Mine has not advanced in 5 years.
Ask him what his estimate kidney function percentage is. Mine has held at 31% since I first got it.
Also, get his weight down so the beetus is not an issue.

He absolutely has to keep this under control to keep the CKD from advancing.

Definitions of overweight:
1. above a weight considered normal or desirable.
2. having more investment in a particular area than is normal or desirable.

Correct. It is what caused it.
On the meat thing, I eat mostly boneless, skinless, and fish. I eat occasional steak or burger. You have to limit your proteins to 4 oz. per meal. I pass on almost all deserts because I just no longer want them. I do have a smoothie every day, with almond milk and fruit.

I believe 24% is the magic number function needs to be higher than that to stay off dialysis.
I would hate to do dialysis. I knew a guy that did it for years before getting a kidney.

I’m four years post transplant after being diagnosed with ckd in the early 2000’s. Only reason it progressed to that point is not heeding what the doctor said about blood pressure, diet, regular check ups. It’s a total lifestyle change for many. Each case is very individual. Many never advance to fill kidney failure. If your Dad is a person reluctant to make changes, he should know that the lifestyle changes are FAR worse once you’re on dialysis. Worth anything to avoid that.
