Well, he seems like a real dick for not throwing you a blanket or offering you some hot chocolate. IMO.

Damn interesting. So the rule about 3.5 or 4 degrees cooler per 1,000 feet gained is only reliable for the daytime? Roughly speaking..?

A decent sleeping bag would have been nice

Weather is so ridiculously unpredictable up there.

if there's wind and we have a mixed boundary layer at night, that holds true and its colder higher up. Like when this front gives my area a glancing blow, there will be enough wind to make the tops colder.

And yes, its almost always gonna be true in the daytime.

When its still and clear like the last two nights here, not so much.

Just priced Publix brand hot chocolate.
High dollar far as I’m concerned.
Pack of 10 for 5 bucks.

Because when its still and clear at night, air separates by density. Cold air, is denser than the warm as you know, and sinks to the bottom of the vallies.

Ran into this when I had a place in a draw, not even a real valley. Full of trees so there was never any wind at the house either.

I'd drive out of it, only about a 1/4 mile, and the temp would go up about 10 degrees at times in the winter according to the readout in the truck.

Well, I'll just keep checking forecasts but right now for us two things are worse than they were this a.m.

In stead of two nights in single digits, it's four in a row.

Isobars are no farther apart, so winds are going to be strong and when we don't get near thawing temperatures for five days, our plants stressed from three months of drought this fall are going to be even more stressed.

Forecasting 50MPH winds here with snow, have seen 7" to 20", and temps around zero.

Going to be a blast.
