You never know what you’re talking about, so who gives a shite what you think anyway. Plus, dentists can hire who they want, and different jobs have different requirements. And, really, what does it matter if you’ve known the hygienists all your life? That has no bearing on anything.
There’s a difference between dental assistants and dental hygienists. Hygienists are able to clean teeth (hence the word ‘hygienist’ from the word ‘hygiene’ and need a certificate and schooling and such). Whereas, assistants aren’t allowed to do that - but they can ‘assist’ the dentist.
ETA: plus that reply wasn’t to you anyway. Unless you’re tigergirl10

Why did the wife prepay? Train her better. Also you can still cancel the appointment and ask for a refund.

Yeah, this would piss me off as well. I get that dentists need vacation too, and that probably 90% of what you’re paying for is the cleaning anyway.
But they shouldn’t charge you for a consultation. In fact, I would be pissed off strictly because they didn’t tell me the dentist wasn’t going to be in the office that day - even if they did the consultation for free. It’s a huge inconvenience to have to go back just for the consultation when you booked your appointment with the expectation that the dentist would be there.
If anything they should do the consultation for free (you already paid for the exam anyway) and apologize for the inconvenience/lack of communication.

Exactly, and most likely. The hygienist couldn’t say what the exact problem was. It’s her molar which she will have for 3-4 more years so ‘crown’ was thrown around among other options. If it’s more than a basic filling, then yes I’m sure we will need to go back and then schedule another appt.
The point is if the dentist was there, the 2 min consultation he could have figured out the problem and scheduled it right then. Or if it was a basic filling, a small chance he knocked it out there.

Wut? That’s 95% of their job. I’ve been to probably 10 dentists in 6 different states and never had a dentist clean my teeth. Always a hygienist. The dentist always comes in for 30 seconds at the end to take a look and you’re done.

This office is a young guy, mid 30s, and an almost retired guy he bought the practice from. They are open M-Th only. 4 days a week, 2 dentists.
Plus, my understanding is that many small dental offices hire out a travel dentist exactly for items like vacation. They pay someone to come in for them. This is called the cost of business. I’m pissed because again I’m acquaintances with the guy and know he likely is a cheap arse that just refused to spend the money to do this at my loss.

a dentist cleaning teeth is like a physician doing an IV over a nurse.
I can start IVs, doesn't mean I should do it compared to the nurses who do them every day.

Ive only ever to been to 2 separate dentists in my life. The pediatric one and then the one I still have now since I turned like 15ish. Both places had the hygienists clean my teeth and the dentist come in to check for cavities/issues/xrays etc. This thread is strangely eye opening to the fact that ive been living in a bubble my whole life thinking its how everyone else does it.

I was wondering the same thing.. but I would guess the majority in this thread have the same experience as us.
Hell, if dentists spent all day cleaning teeth when would they have time to do the actual dental work? I’ve never heard of a dentist doing routine cleaning. But maybe we’ve been going to weird dentists

The only one who is stupid is you - anyone can look up the state’s requirements for dental hygienists. So, you don’t have to know anyone to know the qualifications. You think it gives you some kind of credibility because you know someone? By law the hygienist’s certificate has to be up in the office. Not too hard to notice that in a dentist’s office.
Plus, you’re the only one who misread what I said about dental assistants and dental hygienists. Look at your own self before you start throwing insults.

Would be amazing if some dentist from bumfrick Louisiana checks this thread and realizes that most offices the dentist has 3 or 4 + hygienists that clean the teeth and all they do is a 2 minute exam.

The people commenting on the whole dental hygienists deal, live in Louisiana. Do you live in Louisiana, or no? Because that is where the disconnect is happening between whether or not Dentists or Hygienists partake in dental cleaning, as you’re rebuttal is that where you live the Dentist's perform cleaning procedures.

Ive been gong to the same dentist my whole 46 years of living on this earth.....still to this day...its a family clinic....he's the dentist.....his wife and daughter are both dental hygienist...as well as sever other girls in the office....the all do the cleaning and ex-rays,,I go twice a year...sometimes I get a different hygienist but they are all dental hygienist and not assistants.
The Dentist will come in after the cleaning and look at the xrays, check my fillings, ask ask fer questions and we will shoot the shite since I've been know this man and his family since I was born...
GRT/Bella is a fricking idiot, but we already know that
