I don't have one on retainer, but I can pick up the phone and call one if needed pretty easily. No need to keep one on the books unless you really need one at a beckons call, imo.
At one time I had 3 on the payroll. But one became a judge, one died, and one still is practicing.

I have a guy that I can call, and he picks up to repay a favor from way before I was born. He’s basically retired but he enjoys destroying deceitful and one-sided contracts where someone is trying to take advantage of another person.

On retainer? No. Do I have lawyers I use/used for stuff? Yes.
In my line of work, I have someone tell me they’re going to “call their lawyer” or that I’ll be “hearing from their lawyer” at least once a week. So far, not one lawyer has ever contacted me. But I love the threat because I can say, “This conversation is over. We will respond to your legal counsel when we hear from them.”

I've had a F'ed up year and have used three different Lawyers for three different problems, I'm in for about $30,000.
I can call them at any time but when you get your bill it will have .25 hour phone conversation 08/24/2023 $245.00

I've used the "I need to run this by my lawyer" a few times before, but I am also the CEO of a manufacturing company and have had to use employment law attorneys, commercial property attorneys, and defense attorneys within the past few years.
Also have an old friend that is now an ambulance chaser that I can call and will usually answer my call right away, at the very least call me back after court.
