Why should they? Make yourself valuable and you will get paid.
With automation, this will get harder and harder for people to do. When the wealth is concentrated in the hands of fewer people, those made useless will be more likely to vote for socialism/communism. Their votes will count as much as yours does. Your fate and that of your kids is tied to theirs. I’m not saying having unions stop automation is the answer, but there needs to be one.

But it’s not just that the rich own a lot of stock and the stock market did well, Kinder said. It’s also what many of the big companies that made the most money in the early days of the pandemic — companies like Amazon and Walmart — chose to do with those profits.
“These companies spent five times more rewarding their shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks than they did raising pay for all of their workers,” she said.
Meanwhile, in many countries, inflation is outpacing wages for most workers.
“Hundreds of millions of people are unable to afford the cost of living,” said Nabil Ahmed of Oxfam America, which put out the report.
Unions protect union members.
Corporations protect share holders.
If I need to join a union I can apply to join the union, go through apprenticeship, and pay my dues. If I want to be a share holder I need to already have capital to invest. If everything is getting more expensive without paying keeping pace guess what I have less money for?

These companies will suddenly realize they aren't diverse enough and will hire DEI firms to help them fire all the overpaid white workers and bring in some minority people at a much lower rate.
I mean fix their diversity issues.

a lot of people have very little grasp on how big of an issue this automation stuff is.
the real solution is that a big percentage of the profits from these automated jobs goes towards UBI. I don't see any path for America to reach that point though. The companies that buy the machines that do all the jobs will make all the profit. A larger percentage of the population will be destitute. The people that make the decisions won't give a shite because they will be rich.

I can't blame them for wanting more pay and getting it but anyone with a brain knows that it's driven by runaway inflation caused by government spending.
There's no free lunch except for government employees in Washington.
Increase the minimum wage: businesses either have to increase their prices (more inflation) or go out of business.
More government regulations related to the climate change myth: it increases the cost of manufacturing cars and trucks so it cost more to transport goods which is passed on to consumers.
Student loan forgiveness: more federal deficit which will require higher taxes to offset the cost aka the Democrats are buying more votes.
Bring in more illegal immigrants: more government spending to deal with the immigrants so less money for FEMA and other tax payer support.
It becomes a vicious cycle of ongoing government spending and at some point the deficit bubble will burst along with their goal of molding society into their own delusional vision.

Tell companies to stop requiring college degrees for anything remotely past entry level jobs and we'll see less people going to college.
And we need the illegal immigrants. Who else is going to work for $5hr so all those poor businesses don't close due to high wage cost.

Govt employees everywhere. We could live with 25% of what we have now and do everything we need to do.

So we’ll have the uber wealthy with their millions off Chinese labor and automation. The illegals mowing grass and working for $5 an hour. Then what, a bunch of Americans watching Hulu and ordering Doordash, smoking weed, and shopping on Temu till their parents’ money runs out. And they will still vote. Communism will look real good to them when they have no perceived future.

Bless your heart. I've been working a long time. In every major company I have worked for they have fired or laid off all their veteran workers to bring in people at a lower wage. I've seen entire departments fired only to be rehired as contract workers.
Again. Make yourself valuable and you will get paid. Tale as old as time.

You want to be mad at a group? Look at C Suite that get paid 200X the average worker at the company.
45,000 workers v. a dozen C Suite suits. The C suites are not causing inflation.
Automation is coming. The union boss are dinosaurs, but they definitely did a good job of extracting money here one last time for port workers.

quote:correct, we have an extremely inefficient port system when compared to other industrialized countries, especially consdered the amount of money being paid out
So dock workers are so essential to the economy that if they don’t work it will shut down the US but not essential enough to deserve a large pay increase?
The countries that are more efficient than us tend to have more automation, our unions prevent that. They are artificially making themselves more essential

There is a lesson to be learned from this. Don’t frick around asking for 4, 5, 6…… even 20% raises. Ask for damn near 80 and settle for 60+.

So y’all know how this works? The more they pay the workers…the more the companies charge for services…the more all of the goods will cost. This is how and why prices for everyday items go up. And people think that the companies just won’t make as much money…WRONG.
So you mean to tell me they could have been charging more for their services the entire time but didn’t? Lmao.

I'm glad they got what they got. A few more people will hang around in the middle class before it is completely destroyed in this country.
