They do, and I won't.

I'm not even a good Catholic because I struggle with the horrific things the church has done.

To me, there is little use for atheists who take pleasure in trolling good people and the Westboro Baptists. Those two groups are a stain on society.

Zealots and Ideologues are who you should issues with.

No. It is the atheists who publicly and consistently make fun of those who believe. If Christians do that to non-believers it is also wrong. The non-believers, on their own are not wicked. Just misinformed.

Think of it like this: Christians are inviting atheists to their party because their belief structure says the must do so. Atheists respond to the invitation by saying that Christians' party is stupid.

Atheists have no party. Only the void.

I mean, it's a message board.

The chances of me, or anyone, convincing an avowed atheist of the Word are pretty small, and more likely, to further entrench that person on a a bad path.

I still stand by the offer I made then, as your salvation is important.

From an atheists/agnostic POV, we're all invited to the party and we're at the party right now so let's focus on being good to one another in the present at this party. And asking nicely, please stop trying to convince us to go to an invite-only afterparty that may or may not even happen or be real.

Now that we have that out of the way, here's another beer.

I see Christians openly mock atheists vastly more frequently than I see atheists openly mock Christians. Yet, I almost never see Christians denounce other Christians for doing so.

What your belief structure says you must do is your concern, not mine. Again, Christians are free to claim that they are justified in trying to impose their belief system on others; they simply aren’t allowed to pretend as though they aren’t doing so. Proselytizing religious beliefs isn’t the default, no matter how much religious people would like to frame it as such. Speaking of parties, if someone invited you to their party, and you respectfully declined, how many more times would it take before you considered that person to be an overbearing a-hole? And no, swearing that it’s truly best for you if you accept the invitation doesn’t make it less overbearing or assholish

Martyrs, but sure. Islam venerates those martyrs. Catholics venerate their saints who maintained their faith until death. My point is that those people are venerated because they are the exceptions, not the rule. If everyone did it, it wouldn’t be “special”.

No. They have the right to believe whatever they want. I wish they'd change their mind, but free will and all.

What makes me mad is when they ridicule other people's beliefs. They seem to be worse about it than any religious person.

Agreed.

Im a big believer in Matthew 10:14

Shake the dust from your sandals, and move along.

You've heard the Word, you don't belive the Word, so the instruction to the discipleis to move along.

I guarantee that you know more than you realize; that’s actually the over arching point I always try to make on threads like these

Christians in America assume everyone who isn’t wearing an emotional support demon t-shirt is a Christian, just like Muslims in Iran, or Hindus in India. The majority religion always believes everyone belongs to the majority religion unless shown otherwise. Which is why people think atheists are militant assholes: most Christians believe those are the only atheists that exist.

While both sides have their militants, religious people are allowed to display their religiosity and still be “normal”. Non religious people immediately become “militant” or “edgy” the moment anyone finds out they aren’t religious. That’s the double standard I think is so insidious, because it feeds into the otherizarion I’ve discussed.

Here in the US I think it's more Anti Christian than these people being pure atheists.

They don't do the same with other religions. The atheist left even embraces Islam.

This is what I'm getting at, I see Atheists openly mock Christianity way more than any other religion.

I am an atheist. But I'd rather be an atheist here in this country than in a majority Muslim country.

Make me mad? No, it’s their soul. I am sad for them because it’s a terrible way to live. I grew up agnostic and looking back would consider even that a fairly empty life.

Unfortunately, I've found that people remember The Great Commission ("Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and ..") far more often and completely forget that Matthew 10:14 exists, but I appreciate your perspective in particular.

Of course, but I think that’s more pragmatic than anything. It’s an extremely modern issue in the West that you have, say, Muslim politicians saying that they support/oppose XYZ law because of their religious beliefs. Christian politicians have been saying that for roughly a millennia. If an American wanted to rage against the religious machine, Christianity has been the only game in town since the founding. I have to assume it’s the same thing for my referenced atheists in Iran or India. An Indian living in India railing against Christianity strikes me as a bit impotent.

Now, with that said, I put the willful idiots who vocally support other religions, like Islam, in an entirely different basket.
