So the FAA ordered a 10 day closure, causing airlines to cancel flights today, and then 8 hours later says oopsie?

WTF is going on at the FAA?

According to this report, it is more a case of WTF is going on inside the War Department:

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford last night decided to close the airspace — without alerting White House, Pentagon or Homeland Security officials.
Bedford told officials the airspace restrictions would be in place to ensure safety until issues with the War Department could be resolved.

US Government is filled to the brim with incompetent idiots. But, who didn't know that, right? Grass is green and all that.

The Pentagon had undertaken extensive planning on the use of military technology near Fort Bliss, a military base that abuts the El Paso International Airport, to practice taking down drones.

Two sources identified the technology as a high-energy laser.

Meetings were scheduled over safety impacts, but Pentagon officials wanted to test the technology sooner, stating that U.S. Code 130i requirements governing the protection of certain facilities from unmanned aircraft had been met.

… The airlines were under the impression that the airspace closure was put into place out of an abundance of caution because the FAA could not predict where U.S. government drones might be flying. The drones have been operating outside of their normal flight paths.

Doing something might not have been a bad idea, but going to 9/11 level including threat of being shot down and without coordinating and alerting the other departments were mistakes.

I think a cartel drone (or drones) was also shot down.

Source?

What they thought were cartel drones were actually helium balloons from some kid's birthday party.

So not even a weather balloon? That line was used up already.

Something very fricky happened. Whatever happened, it’s not about party balloons or cartel drones.

We certainly did not spend billions of dollars to create high tech energy lasers that can be used to target party balloons. They would have quite obviously tested the high tech targeting system against an assortment of balloons and drones 1st…before hooking it up to costly high energy lasers.

Sucks for UTEP basketball!

El Paso is the 22nd largest city and damn near a million people.

Albuquerque and Phoenix are like five hour drives. This is very weird.

They can fly in an out of Las Cruces, NM. It's only about 45 minutes away.

Based on what you linked, that sounds more like an issue with FAA.

From the article in the tweet you shared, but it does say it was disabled which could have been done another way. It’s also not clear if it was disabled at same time as ballon. That is why I said “think” as there are some holes to fill in. Both events were earlier this week and not from the laser test or expected laser test that caused the FAA to restrict airspace last night.

Earlier this week, the anti-drone technology was launched near the southern border to shoot down what appeared to be foreign drones. The flying material turned out to be a party balloon, sources said. One balloon was shot down, several sources said.

The Mexican cartels have been running drones on the border lately, the sources said, but it was unclear how many were hit by the military's anti-UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) technology this week. One official said at least one cartel drone was successfully disabled.

Where did you read the below?

I have only read it was a party ballon as in the type of ballon and not that it got tied to an actual party. I was kind of wondering if the cartel was testing us or trying some kind of misdirect with the balloons.

They said it was a party balloon. I assumed that meant it came from a party.

FAA trying to avoid another mid air collision with military assets since it seems like military is flying outside normal opps and not being completely forthcoming

But 10 days is nuts
