It was that way once but those days are gone. You have people who do not intend to make a living any other way than thieving and stealing and robbing people of things they have worked hard for. It should be a very dangerous way to live. They are parasites and should be treated accordingly.
The world is overpopulated. We have don’t have room or resources for that. The population needs thinning. These human parasites are a good place to start.

Odds of successful capture and prosecution on this type of crime are near zero, I would guess.
I wouldn’t kill anybody over it, but it’s dishonest to argue that a trial is anything like a likely alternative.
