February 3rd - The day the music died

February 3 will forever be remembered as "The Day the Music Died."
That day, Buddy Holly, "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson, and Ritchie Valens performed at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. It was their final performance.
Moments later, the men boarded a plane to head to their next show in Minnesota. Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed, killing Holly, Richardson, Valens, and the pilot, Roger Peterson.
We remember all of them today, 67 years later.

That can't be a coincidence.

How?
The most accepted story is that the Big Bopper was ill with the flu and asked Waylon Jennings for his plane seat; Jennings agreed. Buddy Holly jokingly told Jennings, "I hope your ol' bus freezes up," and Jennings replied, "I hope your plane crashes"—words that haunted him life.
Ritchie Valens fesred flying but wanted to avoid the bus and asked Tommy Allsup for his seat. They flipped a coin; Valens won and reportedly said, "That's the first time I've ever won anything in my life."

I messed up the name. I couldn't remember if it was Merle or Waylon, it's been awhile

The Big Bopper was moved several years ago to a new location because the old one couldnt accept a planned monument.
During the move, his son had the body examined to see if the rumored that he survived the initial crash and died seeking help was true. His body was found a little ways away from the crash, but the state of the body made any survival impossible. He was simply thrown there.
There was also a rumor that he was shot, due to the presence of a gun in the wreckage, but that was also disproven.
He was not yet born when the crash happened, so this is the only chance he ever had to see his father.

Merle was in prison at San Quentin at the time.

No disrespect intended for Buddy, Ritchie & J.P. but for most of us here it's October 20

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
