I love San Francisco. It has some downsides, but what city doesn't? Great food, great bread, cable cars, Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands, the Presidio, Lombard St, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, some great golf courses, the ballpark, super interesting people, etc.
If you took away the top ten attractions, the next 10 would still put it high on the list for places to visit.
I have never lived in the city, but I loved being a short drive from all that it has to offer for most of my life.

Gay. Then random thoughts like Alcatraz, car chases, trollies, Dirty Harry, 49er’s, and Rice a Roni.

I’m there at least once a year. Sometimes 2-3 times. My first thoughts of SF are food and money. But most all things mentioned here are not off base for one’s first thoughts of the city. It has them all, both good and bad.

Makes me think of some great vacations there and in the area.
Walking the city, watching fireworks on the bay on July 4th, standing atop the Marin headlands overlooking GG and the city, eating here, drinking here, yosemite, tahoe, mammoth, etc.
Then I think about how such a beautiful area is ruined by some of its people and politics.
