That's uh, definitely not something people say.

I've been to Chicago probably over 50 times since 1993, have ridden the El probably 200 times been to countless neighborhoods and walked around in many or most of them.

I was never mugged or ever felt the least bit intimidated or in fear anywhere. A couple of whinos on the El and that I understand puts fear in some, but I just avoid.

I know there are dangerous areas but I stay away from those, which I would tell anyone coming to Baton Rouge to do. I mean tell friends from elsewhere where to go here I don't tell them to the corner of Mohican and Wyandott.

Now i was mugged in Baton Rouge back in the early 80's as a teenager.

One of the people I heard that saying from got held up at gunpoint in Wicker Park. He hadn't been in Chicago too long. He was roommates with a girl who got her bike stolen almost immediately after moving to Chicago.

There was a Walgreens down the block, a couple of years ago a guy went into to rob the place and ended up stabbing an employee to death, they were trying to get away. About two blocks south of the Division-Milwaukee intersection.

I get it, millions of people go through there, not everyone experiences it. I hope you all never do. But it is what it is.

Hey T1gerNate Dumbfrick, in 2024, Chicago lost 56,235 residents, the largest population loss in the Midwest and the third largest in the country.

You're like the humorous "coulda been me..." posts but without trying to be funny.

Whatever man. There's a lot of crime in Chicago. Sorry that hurts your feelings.

hey, maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. Never had any issues in New Orleans either and I've been there more times than Chicago for sure.

What you relate could very well be Baton Rouge as well....sounds just like it.

I'll add that common sense goes a long way in staying out of trouble and avoiding trouble, I think that may factor significantly in my good luck.

South LA born and raised. Visited Chicago for the first time in 2015 and my wife and I loved it so much, we moved here in 2019 after repeated visits. No regrets at all and in fact, our quality of life has improved in most measurable aspects.

In 2024 Chicago did gain in population, but it was due to 96,000 illegal migrants moving in that year.

In 2023 and 2004 the state of Illinois lost a resident every 9 minutes.

In the past 20 years the city of Chicago has lost over 250,000 black residents, that's more than the number of black residents currently in New Orleans.

Only experience I have with Chicago is going to Cubs games and hanging around Wrigleyville. We did take the Red Line to South Chicago once so my Dad could go to Buddy Guy's Blues Bar. Crazy how the landscape changes in just a handful of train stops.

Planning on Wrigley early summer this year.

when one(or more) of those teams are winning, and going to post season, that whole area, the city and the burbs, is like one big community, fun place to be

When the Hawks were on fire in the 20 teens, it was electric. Nice spring weather would hit during the first rounds of the NHL playoffs and the bars would be packed with people partying for the games. And there's nothing like the UC for a big Blackhawks playoff game. So fun.

Also, to put a bow on the beach discussion. Yeah, this is alright. Though I do know that in recent history Castaways at North Ave beach has been "taken over" at times by groups from the south side with the sole intent of causing issues.

ETA: The "Playpen" right by Oak St Beach is always a scene for the boating crowd. There was an instagram thread on it here a while back that was good. North Ave Beach (the main one) is on the far right edge of the first picture below.

When TV shows used to film in Toronto, they had to spread trash around to appear accurate. Now, not so much I assume.

I’m one of the alive ones. I paid over $6k in property taxes for my 1,100 sq ft condo and a boatload of other taxes but don’t have kids and utilized very few city services. They took a hit when we bailed. Happening constantly these days and they’re panicking.

Imagine moving to DC because the tax burden looks more attractive there

quote:

New Census Bureau data provides more evidence Illinois’ massive tax burden is driving residents away: 95% of the nearly 83,000 residents who left in 2024 went to states with lower taxes. The U.S. Census Bureau released state-to-state migration estimates on Jan. 21 detailing where Illinois residents moved in 2024. The American Community Survey estimates show 82,900 Illinoisans left the state on net and Illinois lost residents to 32 states and Washington, D.C.
