Learned in African American history class at UNO.

Half of the black students got furious over this.

Black professor was like "it's what happened....don't know what to tell you"

worth repeating...

I was in a CommD class where we were going over different dialects in America. When we reached the topic of Black English Vernacular Wikipedia, the two black girls in the class freaked out on the teacher. They caused a huge scene and stormed out of class.

Wasn't she the one that was a freed slave b/c of a romance with her owner (later husband), and she acquired more slaves (friends and family) as a way to "free" them? Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I don't think she was your normal slave owner.

I don't know why it's so hard to believe that they would own slaves when they sold them into slavery in the first place. And today they think nothing of killing each other.

I found it interesting the New Orleans made the June 19th reading of the Emancipation Proclamation a holiday, considering it sanction slavery in New Orleans.

text from Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation
quote:

Louisiana, (except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans)..... and which excepted parts, are for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.

And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

To be fair, I don't think it is

While your point is valid... This knowledge is available anyone who is willing to look into it... So in that sense it is common knowledge...

If we can get the taxes high enough, we can defund the police and get rid of the virus.

You need to free your slaves now and start washing feet pronto.

I don’t know how else to put it to an obvious racist like yourself, but a self-identified black lesbian (who loves Halle Berry) like me is offended to a degree that I must steal a Flatscreen and some Air Jordan’s.

Now send me your money and I’ll forget about all your transgressions until I need more money.

20,000 out of eight at 4,000,000 slaves in 1861.

20,000/4,000,000 = 0.005

0.5%

The horror!!

None?

History Lesson: Slavery in Louisiana

I remember visiting the plantation by LSU campus. The historian onsite was a nice black lady, and she mentioned this to our group. She also stated, while an unpopular opinion, many slaves were not mistreated as we're led to believe. Sure there were some harsh times in some places, but from experiences in her studies, many slaves, once freed, would come back to work for the family bc they felt like family, and they would also own slaves for themselves. Honestly had no idea about that.

"Its common knowledge"
Well ,in learned Historian circles it is "common knowledge".Prior to 1859 many free blacks in New Orleans owned slaves ,and those slaves with blue collar skills were rented /leased out to perform different jobs.Things such as carpentry and masonary work. When I did land surveying it was common to see these things on property transfers. Many slaves earned their freedom by doing these tasks (capitalism ?).
