I have a high school senior next year, and I don’t know what advice to give her.
I don't know what to do either. I have two kids. My son will be in college in 7 years and is a really high performing student. He has aspirations of going into engineering.
Even then, it's hard for me to figure out how he'll go to school without accruing a lot of debt. He wants the Auburn experience like I had, but I'll need what? $144k to make that happen based on the $36k/year estimate on their website?
And then his sister will follow four years later.
So I need $288k to give my own kids the same opportunities and experiences I had 20 years ago?
My parents spent a grand total of $80k on my education and that included living in a nice apartment near campus. I also changed my major and took some extra coursework during a 5th year.
I can't. I literally can't save that much.

Don’t know about LA, but in Georgia if they live more than 30 miles from the school, most Universities require they live on campus freshman year.

Back in early 90s, I paid $750 a semester and I could rent books. Rent was $250 per month and I lived on $250 for food and extras. I had a part time job too.
Boomer checking in.
I started Auburn in the fall of 71. Tuition was $150/qt and books another $50 or so until I discovered you could buy used texts. Forgot how much my roomie and I paid for rent.
My Dad said it was more to keep a roof over my head, a car , and food/beer than it was to go to school.
Feel for you guys. I send as much as I can afford to AU's general scholarship fund.
I think all colleges need a DOGE audit. Way too much overhead plus they have no reason to rein in cost becsuse kids will just borrow more money.

first i've heard that everyone in louisiana going to LSU lives in baton rouge.
you learn something new every day.

well, they have to have a place to eat and sleep unless you want them living out of their car & eating at mcdonalds.
Guess I am old school... Money for rent and food was never included in any calculation when determining what college "cost" when I was in college. The fee bill was always cheap because there was not living expenses or food on it.

Isn’t TOPS supposed to pay the tuition and you’re left with fees and housing?
It did when I was in school, but that was in the 2000s.
They actually gave me additional money each semester to cover my books and also a joke of an on campus job in an environmental lab where I just did my homework.

I paid on my loans for 15 years and still had to write a $30,000 check last year to pay them off. That was with a scholarship to LSU, which honestly wasn't much more expensive than my in-state school at the time. All for a marketing degree I don't use. Whatever, I enjoyed myself.

Go ahead and thank the government that guaranteed student loans and removed private banks from the equation.
An unlimited supply of money has directly resulted in exploding cost

LSU requires it now.

Ask for an itemized bill. You'll see how big of a racket it is.
LSU lazy rivers don’t get built for free. Blame previous student bodies that voted for these student life or activity centers that are built on campus. That now require a perpetual fee to keep up with maintenance while the library rots.

100k for a 4 year degree. the world is insane
It sure is and those starting salaries for the majority of fields are about the same as they were 20 years ago when I graduated college. 15 hours was $1500-1600 a semester when I was an undergrad. I could work for the summer and make enough to cover my tuition.
Eta: so grateful my son was appointed to a service academy. Gives me another three years before I have to worry about the next one’s college expenses

but the hellhole that was kirby smith was only $900/semester and another $500 i think for food.

I was just confused because OP mentioned TOPS, and you said something about a student living out if his car even though that’s impossible if you follow the rules

i was pointing out they don't have a choice as an entering freshman. just like you can't opt out of the 'undercoating package' at sleazy car dealers.

If you can get TOPS, then you are a LA resident obviously. Scholarship and grants only shaved off $2000ish ?
LSU's website seems to lack information about academic merit possibilities. If their grades are good enough, check out other schools.
Ole Miss example of a more clear break down of merit based scholarships

in TN they pay for 2 years of college to get an associates degree for every graduating senior regardless of grades.
after that, you only need to pay for 2 years of college at a 'real' college in TN to get your BS or BA and they guarantee 100% of the credits will transfer.
anyone who doesn't take advantage of that is a moron.
