How long do you keep ashes on forehead?

After receiving your ashes on Ash Wednesday, how long do you keep them on your forehead? Do you brush them off when you hop back into the car? Wear them all day?

How else are you going to stunt on your Baptist or Methodist coworkers if you don't peacock around until your shift ends?

I’ve always had questions about that too. Generally I keep them on until my first bathroom visit, then wash it off. Other times I’ve kept it for hours. To each his own. Ask yourself why would you want to keep it on? If it’s for the reminder all day that from dust you were formed and to dust you will return, then keep it on all day. If it’s because you want to spark a conversation with someone about your faith, keep it on. If it’s because you want to semi- gloat about how much of an awesome Catholic you are, then wipe it off.

Same thing Father Mike said this morning. Also today's Gospel is one of my favorites.

From today's gospel
quote:
“Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. - Matthew 6:2

Usually just keep them on until I shower at night, but I also usually go to a 5pm service and the only people that I see afterwards are my direct family that I live with.

I keep them on until I inevitably forget and rub my forehead. Then I walk around with a big splotch instead
The other posters are right that you should keep them on as long as they aren't some sort of prideful display. I encourage everyone to understand the meaning behind them in case you're asked what they represent. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if you were given the opportunity to share your faith and you're caught stuttering because you can't explain the reasoning?

If you’re not using it to draw others to Christ it needs to go
This goes for anything in your life not just Ash Wednesday

Catholics and their "works"
Reminder: The Lord Jesus Christ did all the work. We don't need to add to it. He was perfect

If you try to make it any % your own it doesn’t work and the whole thing falls apart
He lived the perfect life you never could so you don’t have to. All you have to do is put your full trust in the finished work Christ did on the cross

As soon as I get in the house from burning the cardboard boxes from Amazon? You Catholics and your in your face symbolisms. Congrats on getting falling down drunk yesterday, and then getting a priest to finger some dirt on your head the next morning. I'm sure Jesus is proud.

Downvoted for illiterate use of "they're"

I grew up in Birmingham where there are not a lot of Catholics. The first time I remember seeing ashes on someone was when I was in 11th grade. I wasn’t sure what it was but was afraid to ask. I still don’t see many people practice it today but even though I am not Catholic, I enjoy being reminded of fellow Christians around me when I do see it.

I don't think I'm perfect because I am a Catholic
I am a Catholic because I know I'm not
