a little bothered about spending a month off.
Two weeks at a time is not a month off. Take two weeks; wait a couple months and take another two. I’ve had 5 weeks vacation for 15 years. Just take it.

Do it.
I was planning on 3 weeks off around Christmas/New Years and had zero second thoughts. Had to change plans and it was only 2 weeks in the end.
I generally check emails a few times when off though, but as a return my hours are flexible on normal weeks and I can remote work when needed, like when school gets canceled for snow.

We have an awful fiscal year end. I feel zero guilt over any time off I take the rest of the year.

I worked a job once for 2 years. Only took PTO 3 times (1 afternoon for multiple doctors’ appointments, one sick day with the flu, one Friday for a long weekend).
I requested to take a week and a half off at the end of the summer so I could go on tour with my band and perform at a major festival. I ensured all of my deadlines and meetings would be covered, notified my supervisors months in advanced. The second to last workday before the trip, they told me they were laying me off. F$&k workplaces who offer you PTO, but punish you for using it.

You'd rather work than travel with your wife. We all know you're gay

If you can be gone for two weeks straight, you’re probably not needed or they’ll find someone else to do your job.

I take several extended weekends off per year, usually 4 day to 5 day trips for short trips with the wife or hunting trips. I take the week of Thanksgiving off and my Presidents club trip week off. Then I take off the week of Christmas until a day or two after the New Year.
Once hunting season starts I’m gone a couple times a month from September to January. Don’t feel bad about it at all.

Coming from the arse hat that needs two other guys to craft a 3 sentence long memo to send to his employees, but still fricks it up.

Depends on your work situation. Who does your work for 2 weeks? Do you feel comfortable showing your boss they don’t need you for 2 weeks? Etc.

Use it how you’d like but don’t be shocked when you need a day off and you don’t get paid for it. I’ve seen companies dock salaried employees pay for doing it, and I believe it is justifiable to do so.

Don’t ever be afraid to use your time off.
Everyone is completely replaceable at their job.
You will never get an award for not using your time off.
Memories in life are not made from never taking off time at work

The p in pto stands for pink slip

My former company that I retired from recently has a policy about a 2 week limit, but I spoke with my VP and twice I took a month off. Once for a trip to Everest, and last year a month at Burning Man. I had groomed a strong number 2 and she ran the show

My job has very strict performance reviews and taking time off sometimes reduces your rating and bonus / promo

Correlation is not causation.

When I find out I’ll let you know. But I regularly take 2+ weeks without issue. I’m never really “off” though as I still answer emails and take calls on vacation.

This is the biggest horse shite that we allow to go on in the workforce. Your PTO is part of your benefits and compensation for working there. Imagine if a company said "we'll pay you $100,000 a year, but everyone only takes $70,000 because they don't want to look bad."

I tried that working at Big 4 for a partner based in Austin a long time ago. When he realized I was out of the country on PTO with my family, he told me that if I responded to another email before I got back, he would make sure my rating was lowered.
It's a bit different in consulting, though. For 20 years if I haven't been at a client site, I work from home. I grab groceries in between meetings, block my calendar at 1400 to pick up my daughter, etc. But I'll take a call with a team in Japan or China at night, or things like that. I've flown to Europe for a week at a time and not taken PTO just because I didn't have anything actively to do.
It's usually just as simple as identifying who can be your stand-in while you're out, and prepping your boss as to how things won't miss a step while you're out because you have coverage. Then, when whoever was covering for me goes to Aruba, I cover for them. It works, it just requires communication with stakeholders.
