For a piece of paper that says "when I die, my wife gets everything, if we both die, the kids go to be in the care of my sister"?
No wonder people hate lawyers.

It's a little more complicated than that.
Sure

In Louisiana, you can write that, sign it, date it, and it's a valid will lol.

Well, I guess he can just write that on a piece of paper then.

Technically, he can. In fact, in Texas, if he writes it in his own handwriting, he doesn't even need a witness.

My company has an employee assistance program that allows employees to get a will done for no cost to the employee.

You don't have to pay an attorney to draft your will. You're just taking a risk of it being ineffective if you do it yourself.

Right.. But because of lawyers.... Hence the "hate lawyers" comment still applies
My parents have nearly nothing but a house and retirement plan. 1200 bucks was the cheapest they could find till someone referred them to some senior assistance counseling service/aid place

wife & kids get everything,
Be sure you give your wife everything unless you both die. Otherwise your kids will own half the house that she'll live in. If your kids are turds they can legally require her to buy them out in order to stay in the house. I know this all seems far fetched but be sure to cover your wife for her life.
You each get everything if other dies and when you both die the kids get it all. Welcome to Napoleonic law.

$ 800 is not bad...especially if it comes with a Advanced Directive and a durable Power of Attorney.

Try because of legal requirements to be valid...I have had several "do-it-yourself" wills presented to me to open successions which were fatally defective and invalid for varying reasons.
I don't blame people for trying to do things on their own...I'm not a doctor but that doesn't stop me from googling health symptoms, car repairs, etc. that are outside of my expertise. However, sometimes you really do get what you pay for. If you are trying to be sure that your last wishes are able to be followed and that things are as easy as they can possibly be for whoever has to handle things after you die, bargain-bin pricing on your estate plan can be risky.

Don’t get your legal advice on the OT.

Wife and I both had new wills drawn up, cost us $500 for both (necessary in LA with the crazy Napoleonic code/laws we have)

do you have any advice for something other than a will thats easier on the successors? Im divorced. If I die before my daughter is 18, I would like the money to safe for her until shes old enough
