From just growing up in the country and doing things outdoors with dad, I learned a lot about how to do things and handle myself out there. If I were anywhere there are fish, ESPECIALLY freshwater, I'd have a pretty good shot as long as we're not talking something silly like "got picked up in Caribbean and dumped into the Arctic with only what you were wearing". I assume that I'd have clothing appropriate for the place and season that would keep me alive long enough to make shelter to keep me alive long enough to make fire to keep me alive long enough to secure water and find food. Even then, it's just a pretty good shot, not "I'm going to make Les Stroud feel inadequate".

It would be harder if we're talking brackish or salt water because there's the added difficulty of "might eat poisonous fish" that you don't have with freshwater fish. I'm assuming that I wouldn't be line fishing, but would be net fishing near the banks and just have to eat whatever small critters I catch. It's not reasonable to think that if I were near the ocean, I'd be landing bull reds, specks, and flounder that I know are safe. I'd be eating all those little fish, crabs, and mollusks that hang out under the cover around the shore. Some of those might get you real sick around saltwater, so that's why I figure freshwater would be a better shot. Way fewer things that'll get you sick or kill you if you eat them.

If I had to rely on hunting or trapping for protein, I'd be in real trouble if you didn't give me a rifle because I don't have primitive hunting and trapping skillz. Most of what I know revolves around the water just because of where I grew up. It's hard to learn forest outdoorsmanship when you live on a prairie near the ocean.

So, near rivers and the oceans, I've probably got a shot and more of a shot the farther from the sea. Out in the forest with only shallow streams, I'm probably bear food.

But maybe those karate skills will save me.

I edited my replay about Alone and said can’t do it.

You read about man in life raft making it for 76 day. He had spear gun or fishing line and rain storms gave them water.

Am I trying to stay or escape?

Am I focused on traversing a desert or tropical jungle or a swamp or an island surrounded by saltwater without nutritious food?

If I was instructed to live in the wilderness of New England or the Midwest I'd be fine. But I also wouldn't feel the impending doom of not escaping my environment like if I was in a desert or jungle or swamp.

As soon as I steal a gun, some ammo, a fishing pole and a tent I'm in there.

Considering I've been practicing bushcrafting for a couple years now, I'd live longer than most, especially if I have my knife and ferro rod. But I still wouldn't make it very long unless I got lucky.

If in a true desert, then not long, not even a day. In a remote forested area, doesn't get brutally cold, there's a 50/50 chance of sustaining a miserable life for a years.

With just a knife? I’m gonna hate life for quite some time, but I could do it.

Cant argue here. Scary to eat something you are unsure of

Thats why I make a spear first and foremost. Probably many for defense against bears. I can spear fish and make deathfalls for rodents with timber and rocks. Snares are not something I have ever tried to make. But yea traps aren't easy either.

If you were in a situation where you were totally alone, far away from civilization, let’s say deep in the wilderness with only the clothes on your back and whatever you happen to be carrying (such as a knife). How long can you make it and survive? What skills do you have that could help you make it through?

I carry a swiss army knife that also has a saw on it. I could whip a shelter together pretty quickly. I can't make fire with it, but in my car and my tackle box and my various hunting or range bags, I keep dry tinder, matches and a lighter in plastic bags. So if I had any of those things on me, I could make fire.

If I'm in my environment, I am well learned on wild edibles that could sustain me for quite some time. I'm a good fisherman, but I don't necessarily keep a rod at all times, except in my vehicle I do keep one of those survival rods that were popular about 10 years ago, a reel, and some basic terminal tackle. But without that, I'd have to find a small creek to make a dam and then a weir and a basket of white oak sapling splits, then chase whatever minnows, crawdads, etc down into it for occasional protein.

It wouldn't be fun, but I think I could make it for quite a while pending an injury or other medical emergency. This assumes it's my environment. If you dropped me off somewhere I'm not familiar with local flora/fauna, I wouldn't last too long.

Regarding water- I've been drinking from creeks and streams since I was a little kid and never once got sick. Lord knows how many little critters and/or antibodies I've got. As long as I'm in my home turf. I don't think water critters in other parts would be as friendly to my digestive system.

Smartest move you could make, but still incredibly difficult.

You may have the training, but spearing fish with a spear isn’t easy, let alone a homemade one.

And that is if you are lucky enough to end up near an area with a sufficient amount of fish.

To be able to survive in these situations is as much luck as anything else.

I’d either starve to death or eat something poisonous or break my leg and lay in misery until lack of water killed me.

So basically what I’m saying is that I’d die a horrific death. That’s how my skills are.

When I visited Belize in the 1970’s, the locals would build simple fences from the beach to maybe 20 feet out and then have the fence loop back on itself. Fish that swam into the fence would swim along the fence and enter the loop/circle and just keep swimming in circles until fishermen harvested them. I thought that was such a simple idea and could probably be modified for a small stream or creek.
