I got off the bus at 7 and went inside for an hour. Wasn't allowed to play outside and the one time I did I got in trouble. 9 is a good age. That's 4th grade. If you're old enough to know about sex, you're old enough to stay alone for a bit.

Did you read the law you quoted? Leaving them home for a little while is not abandoned.

My boys are 11 now and my wife and I allowed them to be by themselves at 9 for short periods of time. Sometimes work conflicts dictated it as she is a teacher and I was out in the field training.

Now, that they're 11, we've let them be home for longer. She and I leave early for work, so we make sure to get them up and fed, then they put themselves on the bus. Same when they come home. They have to call either my wife or myself once they arrive. All doors locked and no playing outside. No answering the door.

In asking other parents of their friends, they too took the same approach. I'm 40, so I grew up in the 80's. My parents had no issues leaving me by myself when I was in the fourth grade.

why did they feel the need to get CPS involved and not handle it like adults and talk to the parents?

Unfortunately in my experience HOAs are incapable of functioning in the latter method

It's all anonymous notes and cops randomly showing up to your door

At 9 I was riding my bike all over Plaquemine all day long.

We have let my 8 year old stay in the house while we went to the store or run errands or something. My wife's brother lives directly across a non busy street from our house though. All my kid does it watch TV and play the Playstation.

My nine year old stays home alone every now and then for an hour or two. She knows to stay inside or only go in the backyard. We have a burner for emergencies with our numbers programmed in there. She hasn't burned the house down yet so that's nice.

I started out at 8. My parents were always at work so I'd be alone until about 7 or 8pm after school sometimes. Someone told me I was a "latchkey kid". Had never heard that term before.

my parents left me and my sister alone at home when she was 11 and i was 8. we were latchkey kids from 2nd grade on.

our kids are about the same age difference and my oldest is about to be 9. i'd let him stay alone, but not with his 6 year old brother.

all that to say that i agree with the OP and the helicopter parents probably need to EABODs.

OP should break into said people's houses, rape* their wives, and then call adult protective services to prove a point.

*joke. no trillhogging here.

Depends on the kid. I don't let my 9 yr old stay alone for an extended period of time, but 20 minutes or so to pick up food? Sure, as long as he stayed inside. When he hits 11 or 12, extended periods of time and can play outside.

I stayed alone overnight by myself when I was 11.

Yeah. I pretty much gave up after that nonsense. Started trolling all the idiots that keep their kids in a bubble and the thread got deleted.

Not much more entertaining things on the internet than trolling nosy stay at home helicopter parents.

We left ours at home when they were 9 and 11. They weren't allowed to go outside though. We were smart though and informed our immediate neighbors that we talk to quite often. They all offered to watch them, but we just use that as a back-up. If you talk to your neighbors, they would understand. Not that you have to, but it keeps crap like this from happening. Helicopter parenting is why some kids can't function when they are young adults.

I did read it. It's the only law regarding the post subject that was even close.. I also advised the wording was subjective. Not intending to return is somewhat open ended.. One hour, one day. Not saying the law is mirror perfect to the question but it's the only thing close. Not the lawmaker, just a googler.

I would come home after school around 9 or 10 and be home alone for an hour or so until my mom got home. It was the 90's though, so there were less pussy bitches around.
