Yeah, independence was the goal. Must be a generational thing. We actually wanted independence and trial/error was ok.

feels pretty good to have maneuvered the minefield, doesn't it?

Does it snow there on a regular basis?
No thanks.
No thanks.

ITs hard to return to the city after a successful visit to nature.
It's almost a certainty that on my return to N.O. the first thing I notice is the filth----litter in the streets, unkept properties, potholes/sinkholes in the streets, etc.

If I didn't have family and a career in SELA, I'd pack up and move somewhere like this without a second thought.
Better take a look at Zillow before making that call.

never understood that way of thinking, I bolted from La after college and with a brief exception haven't lived there since, I saw my parents probably more than a lot of people I know that never left, you've got to have the balls to make your own way and make the time and effort to get back to see your family, and they can travel too, btw
We never expected to stay here after my wife finished school, but an opportunity opened near our families and we took it. Now that we have our first kid, my wife has the whole "I want our kid to know their grandparents" mindset. I understand it, but it's weird because we were 100% on board with moving elsewhere while she was in school (interviewed for jobs in Hawaii and California, considered jobs in Colorado and other places that I'm probably forgetting). One of the downsides that we looked at if we were to move away was that we felt like it would greatly cut down on our travel elsewhere, because we would feel like we had to visit our family every time we had vacation.

Oh hell yeah...lol.
Especially considering some of the routes I could have taken.

It has nothing to do with independence, it has to do with our kids having a close relationship with our parents. We've taken risks (we moved "away" for the first 4 years of our marriage), and don't really rely on our families for any sort of "support".

Give me cold weather over the heat all day as long as we aren't taking Fairbanks or Northern Minnesota type of cold.

Maybe not in your case.

One thing we don't have to worry about. I really appreciate that. Trash is almost non existent and roads are resurfaced every few year. Advantage of a small city, I suppose

Our kids have scattered, I do notice that the "less diverse" the area is, the more liberal the whites are.

So many people are stuck in LA with this, myself included. I want out but I also want my child(ren) to grow up with grandparents
As you know, my wife and I bailed out and the little man still gets a good dose of grandparents. We do facetime fairly regularly, multiple visits where they come here through the year, and he has been spending a few weeks back in LA every summer with them.
Leaving Louisiana doesn't mean they have to grow up without grandparents.

LA has some of the highest tax rates in America yet we are last in EVERYTHING. But you know a fricking Parade and a bug out of our polluted ditches makes it all worth it…… 6 years left and I’m
Moving my kids as far away from this shithole as I can. The best thing I’ll have done with my time on earth is make sure my gene pool is placed outside of this he’ll hole.

Independence from what? Living in your mom basement?

Pretty much.
Or tethered financially/emotionally to them.

Go back in a month and let me know how much you enjoy being snowed in.
