I spent some time in Mobile, attended Spring Hill College. Parents sent me there ‘cause it was a Jesuit Catholic College. Thank God for Dauphin Island, & some pretty easy co-eds…

Used to have one of the BEST bbq rib joints, anywhere, on Old Shell: THE BRICK PIT
Wish it was still around

Decent town
Whether it’s up and coming is debatable but some positive changes have been made-
They expanded their port container capacity in 2025 and now surpassed nola.
Knocked down the civic center for a newer version.
Downtown has come a long way to make it more enjoyable. There was a time when it was a sad, boarded up wasteland.
A nice historic home can be had for fraction of the cost of New Orleans or Charleston

I lived there for 8 years and believe me .. you don't want to live there. It's a shithole... Crime everywhere where.. white trash meth heads everywhere. Mobile is a fricking dump.

Carnival Cruises and I believe other lines are about to increase porting business in Mobile as well. That will have a huge economic impact for Mobile.
Mobile has some strong potential. Can things unexpectedly go south? Yes but I feel the signs are looking really good. Definitely better than New Orleans
I doubt Mobile will be affordable for long. I can see more NOLA residents and others moving to Mobile in the next 10 years. It's really exploding and gaining interest

I do believe the crime is bad but that's expected giving the demographics. But I didn't feel unsafe and I feel like crime for the most part is very avoidable. I stayed on the nicer sides of town my whole visit ... no need for me to go anywhere else. Also I went walking around downtown one night and felt safe doing that. Also usually I'm in by 7p which increases my safety points

Perhaps they cleaned it up but when I lived there 10 or so years ago it was the unsafest city I have ever lived in and I have lived in Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Nashville, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Memphis, and others. Car broken I to twice.. our business was broken into several times... I knew three people who were robbed at gunpoint... I was almost robbed in Tillman's corner while pumping gas and in the Walmart parking lot another time.
It was very bad a decade ago
Perhaps they have cleaned it up.. hopefully they have because Mobile has the potential to be a great small town

I’ve been thinking about taking the train. Bus leaves BR at 5am, train leaves N.O. At 7am, arrives in Mobile before noon. Not sure when you get back to BR or if it makes more sense to spend the night.

Let’s look at actual facts
From yahoo AI-
Overall Crime Rate: The crime rate in Mobile has decreased significantly, with a reported reduction of over 56% in Part 1 Crimes from 2014 to 2024. This indicates a positive trend towards safety in the city
.
Violent Crime: Despite the overall decrease, violent crime has seen an increase in recent years, with a notable rise in homicides, which increased to 39 in 2024, up by 8 from 2023
.
Property Crime: In contrast, property crime rates have generally decreased, contributing to the overall decline in crime
.
Future Projections: Based on historical data, the crime rate for 2025 is expected to be lower than in 2018, suggesting a continued trend towards improvement
.
32 murders? Heh…. Rookie numbers
Those numbers are fake ...get real. Talking to locals is a better indicator of where crime is.

I went down there for a couple of jobs at the shipyards.
Great food, I usually went to the halfshell and ate.
Cleanest and nicest shipyards I've been to.
Did not know they have a top golf so that helps when I get bored in the evenings.

Mobile has been blowing up, industry-wise, over the last decade.

Crazy to see what those guys have done. I lived three blocks from the original location right after they opened. It was a fun place to eat and I remember hoping they make it.

Here’s what local news reported back in May. The trend is clearly downward
“MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The City of Mobile has released updated crime statistics in the halfway point of the year.
Public Safety Director Rob Lasky says there have been 12 homicides this year, compared to 17 homicides at this time last year.
Lasky says forcible rapes are down 59% compared to last year. Robberies are down by 14%, assaults with gun shot wounds are down 11%, and shooting into cases are down 42%.
Lasky credits crime prevention efforts by the Mobile Police Department, the Mobile City Council, and the community. He says there is still work to be done.
The public safety director says this is the second year in a row violent crime stats have been trending down.”
If I had to guess, the bulk of the violent crime is likely isolated to areas not close to downtown.
