Pine straw or shredded pine mulch are the only acceptable ones. Colored hardwood mulch looks terrible.

Better than having a colored munch in your flower bed

Help settle a debate, Pine Straw or Colored Mulch?
not saying which is better, but it seems like small rocks have replaced mulch as the go to bed covering choice.
i got a few prices from guys to redo my flowerbeds and they all gave the thumbs down on the idea of using mulch and said the small rocks was what everyone uses now

When we moved in the front bed was full of river rock. And it was an absolute mess. The crab grass that had grown up through the rock because it wasn’t maintained was miserable to get rid of.

Been thinking bout the rubber stuff to replace rock filled landscaping as an alternative to mulch.

I put black mulch in my garden because I like the look.

Annoying too as kids kick them everywhere or that’s where they start their digs. Tired of rocks.

tell me about it, we had lava rocks and when i tried to dig the beds for replanting the shovel didnt even go 1/2" deep and just bounced off it. i tried kicking the shovel to get it to go in but it just hurt my foot and didnt budge. i paid a guy to come dig it out for me and it took him 6 hours to do a 40x3ft section. i felt bad for the guy, it busted his arse trying to do it. those rocks were a good 8-10" deep into the dirt
now im sitting here thinking about do i really want more rock, but im also thinking i will never be doing it again so i want something more permanent then mulch will be

My other issue is I like to change up my beds, split plants, throw in some different annuals every year around perennials still coming up, etc.
Rock makes it difficult to do that consistently. I get the appeal if you’re putting some bushes or plants in that you don’t plan to do much with.

Which one is more likely to draw attention away from the collection of crushed beer cans and old cigarette butts in my yard?

Lol, what?
Isn't black actually defined as the combination of all colors, or (red, yellow, and blue)? White is the absence of color.
