In the St. Tammany Parish School System, SPED does Not include Gifted and Talented. It is students with Learning Disabilities.

Your connections by now have probably told you that the knife wielding young man had been banned from several other school districts because of his violence.

I mostly get what you said. I guess you mean here that Special Ed is needed but without federal overlords.

Also, the very idea that BIP’s exist is ridiculous.

Besides the actual decades of research behind them?

Send your kids to private school or a Blue Ribbon School at the least.

I think that’s what the poster was trying to say. These days it isn’t just kids with moderate to severe developmental delays. Back in the 80s and 90s when a lot of posters were in school, you could tell who was in Sped. These days it encompasses kids who in the past were just considered slower learners or with mild learning disabilities and it also encompasses gifted and talented.

A lot of the criticism comes from the fact that Sped students aren’t allowed to be disciplined like regular ed kids, and are allowed to get away with behaviors that may pose a danger to other students who are trying to learn. Schools receive more money for a Sped kid, so some may think that encourages schools to label kids as Sped who shouldn’t be.

There’s so much wrong with education today. That’s definitely one of them. We also hand out IEP’s/504’s (behavior plans) like candy in a lot of districts to kids that have 0 business being on one. I’d wager at least half of kids receiving services would be completely fine if they were just pushed a little harder to overcome whatever difficulties they’re having.

I’ve had kids on plans that requires me to give them printed out copies of my notes “because they’re handwriting is bad”. My handwriting sucked as a kid and still sucks now but you know what my parents didn’t do? Coddle me. They forced me to work on it until it was at least legible. The crap we do now is infuriating and honestly borderline criminal because of how far it puts them behind their peers. But a few guys in suits/gals in dresses that haven’t been in a class in decades get to walk around and act like champions because of “how much they’re helping.”

There are accommodations for kids with "Medically Diagnosed" impulse control disabilities, that prohibit them from being disciplined if their behavior is deemed impulsive.

Sad fact

We had a kid in my previous school who, I shite you not, had an IEP that allowed him to cuss at will. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t been shown the paper work. Some idiot school psych in his middle school wrote it in and it followed him for life.

That’s not special education, that’s a kid that was unfortunately born into, and grew up in an environment that didn’t give a shite. The same thing was happening with special education in the 90’s in Louisiana. A kid that’s in a special education classes can remember a football play book, but can’t function in a regular classroom?

I thought placement in regular classrooms was supposed to be limited to when it didn’t cause issues or disruptions with other kids abilities to learn and focus in the class. ADD, dyslexia, speech therapy, and so on didn’t cause issues without other problems the IEP also dealt with, and others could be ok for certain classes and set time frames. Some were almost aways issues. Many districts just seem to push it these days. The regular kids in class get shamed or worse if they or their parents complain even though it’s affecting their education negatively more than it’s actually helping some of the kids with IEPs. The regular teachers either get self righteousness about keeping them regardless of the effect on others or get looked down upon if they acknowledge it’s negative effect.
