There is a Houston meetup.com group that has a weekend golf game at different courses in the area. I've never joined that one but met a guy who said it was a good group (think they also get group discounts sometimes).
Changing jobs, having a kid, or major life changes slows down life for me. I haven't had much of these lately so life is moving fast.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

A most excellent response, sir.
It's cobbled together from years of reading and studying that stuff. I hope it helps. It's nice having that information so readily available now. It just takes an open mind and some study. It's a lifelong journey. The Eckart Tolle suggestion in this thread is excellent. Both The Power of Now and New Heaven and Earth are fantastic books that will give perspective on life. That is a great place to start.

You are right. It does fly by. When I was young, my grandparents seemed "ancient" when they were in their late 40s.

I'm not going to tell you how old I am, but I was 21 when you were born.
Understand this - the hands of my watch turn at the same rate as your (assuming you still have a watch and haven't discarded it for your Smart Phone) and we are aging at the same rate. 1 day at a time.
I was once accused on this board of being old. Yes I am and I plan to get older. That means that I am winning in the game of life.
I wonder what those who mock old age plan to do. Are they going to check out at 30 or just keep winning?
Don't worry about slowing things down - try to speed them up to get the most out of the (hopefully many) years that you still can look forward to.

I honestly think that perception of time is like a road trip. On the way to a new place, time seems to go very slowly. I'm not a science guy, but I suspect this occurs bc we are seeing and experiencing new things. Then, on the ride back, "time flies."
I think you can slow time down by not doing the same things every day. New experiences slow time down.

Some of us feel ancient in our mid-30s

I don't know much of your situation, but you do have options.
As for the wife, dinner/comedy shows, concerts. Or maybe a weekend away?
The kid I know this all to well. Take in games, concerts, hiking, camping? Just a few suggestions.
Also there is nothing wrong with having your own hobbies. Self awareness is as important as couple and family awareness IMO. Maybe pool or dart league, bowling, golf???

Life's like a roll of toilet paper.. closer you get to the end the faster it goes.
The phenomenon is caused by nothing being "new" anymore. So plan trips to new places and new hobbies and such to slow it down.

Been having sporadic bouts of depression myself, as I realize my two kids will be gone from the house in just 3-4 years.
I'm 47 (feel like 30). Some parents in my kids' class can't wait to shove their kids off to college and then change the door locks. Not me. Not even close.
This has me living more in the moment, as others have said.
Chennierre, the confessional is always open.......

Discuss and downvote.
As we age we become more accustomed to watching time go by, that's all I've got from a rational attempt at explaining why it's perceived experiencing a year is shorter at age 40 than age 10.

It is the fault of work. It chews up the majority of our time on earth. And if you are doing something that you really don't consider work, it is extremely painful.
I switched jobs about 6 months ago. Took two weeks off in between. Dropped the kids off at school and did all kinds of shite I never get to do. While it still went by fast, it wasn't as fast as the weeks when working. There was so much time during the day to accomplish things you otherwise never have time for.

eta: stupid internet had lyrics wrong. and kids definitely seem to speed it up, between the time they require running around, and in giving you a seemingly daily reminder in how big/old they have gotten in the short time they have been here. They're kind of like a watch you look at and see the time and think "frick, when did it get this late"

It's called a mid-life crisis.
I slow down by traveling. I work so I can travel to exotic locations. When I get there (particularly the islands) I'm a different person. The stress of my everyday life leaves me and I'm more able to live in the moment. Everyone needs a release.

Yeah and if memory serves, he called his mom a witch in that song. So yeah, that's who your role model is? A drug addict who's mean to his mum?
Let that sink in.....
