States like Florida and Texas have good reason to be concerned. A 2015 study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows car thefts from keys left in the car are rising. There were more than 57,000 cars stolen due to unlocked doors or the keys or key fobs left inside in 2015, 31% more than in 2013. In the wrong hands, they could be used as weapons, or accidentally result in death when driven carelessly.

Texas, for example, although the consequences are slightly less severe. In that state, fines may be up to $200, while car owners could face up to 30 days in jail.

The Consequences of Leaving Your Car Unlocked & Whether Insurance Will Cover It

This article is actually about leaving the keys inside the car, but there are similar laws for just not locking the doors and the car getting stolen.

The only scenario I would consider not locking my doors is if I lived in New Orleans. I know multiple people who've had to replace car windows multiple times. Outside of a gated community, it doesn't matter where you live either. If moving wasn't an option, I would get tired of replacing windows and just leave the door unlocked.

Trying to find a link, I know I've seen it before, but right now just finding links for fines in Australia. So maybe they won't give you a fine here in the US.

At the very least though, if your car is stolen or broken into and it's found that the doors were unlocked, your insurance likely would not cover the damages. And they don't just go after stuff left in the car, they can go after car parts.

Something I found interesting while looking was this article telling thieves how to get out of trouble after breaking into a car.

fricking California

My ex used to leave the doors unlocked, for the same reason as you. That's when I found out about possible fines, that was like 4 years ago so I'm not sure where I saw it. But she wasn't good about removing valuables. She would often leave her purse or jacket or even keys in an unlocked car just because she was forgetful. It was something I always got annoyed with her about.

In my neighborhood, Democrats come through at night and try the door handles. If they are locked they move on.

I leave my wallet open on the ground, so that I don't get mugged.

Strong disagree. Recently there have been groups of car thieves all over the country who canvas neighborhoods checking for unlocked cars. They simply walk away from every locked door. The correct message is the exact opposite of your thread. Lock your doors and you are no longer the easy target.

Agreed. My neighborhood hasn’t had a single car window broken. The only “ break-ins” are bc of the idiots who leave valuables in their car and then forget to lock their doors at night. Then they go on Nextdoor and complain that their car was broken into. First off, it wasn’t broken into, it was simply opened bc you left valuables unsecured, thus inviting thieves into our neighborhood bc they know there are easy targets that’s to them.

I lock my doors and leave my windows down.
Best of both worlds.

Good idea, leave doors unlocked. Wait for crooks to get in car then pop a cap in there arse. You shoot a few of them they quit messing with your stuff. They will know to avoid your address. Yes this is legal in Louisiana. Your car is a extension of your home.

Guess you never heard of door pullers.
Groups that go through neighborhoods pulling door handles looking only for unlocked vehicles. Happens everywhere.

A. Don't leave something valuable/visible in your car.

B. Lock your door

I get neighborhood alerts on my ring app all the time. Never my neighborhood but surrounding areas. Especially townhouses/condo's.
It's always "someone broke into my car last night" 100% of the time they didn't break in they simply opened an unlocked car door. The best is the idiots that leave their wallets in their cars then leave their doors unlocked.
Then you have the people who leave their doors unlocked with keys in it. Car gets stolen. Leave your car running while you go inside the gas station convenience store. Car gets stolen.
Now I have seen the aftermath of a car window that got smashed and a laptop taken in broad daylight because someone left it in their front seat at the gym. The gym is one of the worts places to get your car actually broken into because most people are either going to or coming from work/school and leave backpacks with computers in their car. Right in the passenger seat.
