Yep. My local ACE is my go to. Never have to hunt someone down for help and they actually hire people that knows tools, home improvement, etc.
My only problem with Ace is I'm going to pay 10-15% more for anything. I don't mind paying a little extra for a small business or somewhere helpful (like Ace) but damn.

Menards wishes it could be a Fleet Farm.

Now that you can go online and find the exact location of everything in a Lowes or HD finding a human is less important to me.
Menards used to have good Made in America sales and when I was in the Midwest and one was going on I would pick up some more Jorgensen parallel clamps. Out of Bessey, Jorengen, and Jet I prefer the design of the Jet parallel clamps but they are made in Asia.

Used to have to go there with my dad as a kid. It is a far better place to shop for DIY/homeowner than the other big box stores. Before Home Depot and lowes came into Iowa, Menards was the only option outside of small lumberyards and hardware stores.

The ACE here isn’t too bad. I would say it is 5-10% more on certain things. I still go to Lowe’s if it something ACE is out of or if it is extremely cheaper. I’m like you, I’m willing to pay extra for a small business but some things I will tell them to kick rocks.

I can’t stand Lowe’s. To me they lean too far towards the “light user” demographic. Home Depot leans more towards the “contractor” crowd and people who know what they want and what they’re doing.
100% this. Cute type decorations that my wife wants to put in our yard -> Lowes. Things that need actual fixing around the house -> Home Depot. Menards is sort of a blend of the two, with good yard and holiday decorations, mixed things that can be used to actually fix things.

I pass one of these near our shop in Minnesota. Always wanted to check it out but have yet to actually stop.

Menard's was a place I'd go for fun when I was stuck in North Dakota. It's a magical place

As far as materials go, if I need more than a sheet or two or a couple 2×4s I'm going to the locally-owned and operated outfit. I walk in, sit on a stool, tell them what I need, pay them, drive around back, and a couple baws load it up for me.
Every single time I walk in I'm greeted immediately with, "How can I help you?" or, "What are ya looking for?". That means a lot and it cuts down on the horseshite wondering around and having to pick through a pile of 2×4s looking for some that are halfway useable.
They'll also price match on products if they are the same, but that doesn't mean much because the lumber and sheet goods they sell are of better quality than anything the big box stores handle.

We have a Menard’s next to our house. It’s definitely the best of the the three listed.
